This golden apple didn’t fall too far from the tree at the 2025 Oscars.
After all, Fernanda Torres—who is nominated in the Best Actress category for I’m Still Here—couldn’t help but gush over becoming the second mother-daughter duo to be nominated at the ceremony with her mom Fernanda Montenegro since Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli earned the title in 1969.
“It’s unbelievable to have nominated DNA,” Torres exclusively told Live From E!: The Oscars’ Zuri Hall March 2. “It’s incredible.” (See all the stars on the red carpet here.)
While Montenegro made history as the first Latin American actress to be nominated at the award show in 1999 for Central Station, her daughter could make history as the first Brazilian woman to win the Best Actress category. (Torres is currently up against The Subtance’s Demi Moore, Anora’s Mikey Madison, Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo and Emilia Pérez’s Karla Sofía Gascón.)
And the weight of the film’s three nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best International Feature Film, isn’t lost on the 59-year-old. In fact, she admitted that the cast and crew “never thought that a film spoken in Portuguese” could gain so much traction during award season.
“We worked really hard, Q and A’s after Q and A’s,” Torres explained to Hall. “We didn’t have a huge budget for this film to release it. We just had to make a film that would be watched and it happened.”
Along with vying for a golden statuette, the actress knew it was important that she dressed to impress for the special evening. So it’s no surprise that she dazzled in a black Chanel SS25 couture gown featuring a floral peplum that gave stunning movement as she walked up and down the red carpet.
