Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin’s relationship is in a good place, over two decades after their divorce.
The L.A. Confidential actress—who shares daughter Ireland Baldwin, 29, with her ex-husband—gave an update on her dynamic with Alec in a rare interview.
“Alec and I have a great relationship,” Kim told Variety in an interview published Feb. 25, which marked her first in more than two years. “I have great respect for where he is today, and his family.”
That family now includes Alec’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, and the couple’s seven children.
“You know, we don’t spend Christmases and holidays or see each other very much,” the 71-year-old noted. “But we talk. He’ll pick up the phone and call me, and we have a very genuinely cordial and I think loving relationship in a lot of ways, just because we share a daughter, and I don’t wish him anything but everything good.”
Kim also noted that the 66-year-old—who last July had involuntary manslaughter charges dismissed after being indicted over the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of their movie Rust—has “been through a lot lately.”
She also gave a nod to Hilaria, who Kim said “seems to have a great handle on that. So more power to her.”
Alec—who shares with Hilaria seven children: Carmen Gabriela, 11, Rafael Thomas, 9, Leonardo Ángel Charles, 8, Romeo Alejandro David, 6, Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas, 4, María Lucía “Marilu” Victoria, 4, and Ilaria Catalina Irena, 2, and stars with his wife and their kids on the new TLC reality show The Baldwins—has not responded publicly to Kim’s remarks.
Kim has spoken before about remaining on good terms with Alec post-divorce. In 2016, she told Net-a-Porter‘s magazine The Edit that the two were “cool now.”
“Divorce is hard on a kid, no matter how you cut it,” the Oscar winner said at the time. “And ours was very public and nasty.”
In 2022, in what marked her first on-camera interview in 14 years, Kim spoke out about her relationship with her ex-husband again. “Alec’s a funny one,” Kim said on Jada Pinkett Smith‘s Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk. “We’re all fine and we all get along, whatever. But he’s been, but he’s a challenge.”
Alec and Kim married in 1993 and divorced in 2002, when Ireland was 7. They battled in court over custody of their daughter for several years. In 2007, a voicemail Alec had left Ireland, originally contained in a sealed file from the former couple’s court battle, leaked online and went viral.
The 30 Rock alum later apologized for the audio recording, in which he had called his and Kim’s daughter a “rude, thoughtless little pig” for not answering his call at a pre-arranged time and his ex-wife a “thoughtless pain in the a–.”
“I’m sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child,” he said in a statement on his website one day later. “I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now.”
Ireland went on to poke fun at the now-infamous voicemail, including at her dad’s 2019 Comedy Central roast. “It’s good to be here,” she joked at the event. “I almost didn’t even know about it because I haven’t check my voicemails from my dad from the last, like, 12 years.”

Alexander Rae Baldwin III—the Emmy-winning actor known as Alec Baldwin—was born April 3, 1958, to Alexander Rae Baldwin Jr. and Carol Newcomb. He’s the second of six siblings and the oldest brother.

Their father died at the age of 55 in 1983 but Carol—who survived a 1991 breast cancer diagnosis—lived until she was 92. She passed away May 26, 2022, with 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and an eponymous cancer research foundation to her name.
“My mother taught me about second acts. And third ones, too,” Alec wrote in tribute when she died. “She spent the last 25 years of her life as a fighter and a champion for the cause to which she devoted so much energy.”

On Aug. 23, 2024, Justin revealed that son Jack Blues Bieber had arrived.
“WELCOME HOME,” the singer captioned a photo of the newborn’s squee-inducing tiny foot juxtaposed against one of his mom’s immaculately manicured fingers.
Justin’s mom, Pattie Mallette, wrote on X, “CONGRATULATIONS @justinbieber & Hailey. I LOVE YOU FOREVER BABY JACK.”
