Andrew Garfield doesn’t want to get tangled up in the web of fascination around his love life.
“I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone,” The Amazing Spider-Man star said in an October 2024 interview with Esquire, “ever.”
Still, that hasn’t stopped the internet from marveling over the latest rumors—specifically why exactly Andrew is spending so much time with Monica Barbaro. Not only did a social media user capture footage of them attending Jonathan Bailey’s performance of Richard II in London Feb. 19, but the We Live in Time actor and the A Complete Unknown actress also posed for a photo together at W Magazine’s Annual Best Performances Party in Los Angeles in January. E! News reached out to their reps for comment but has yet to hear back.
While Andrew would prefer to keep his romances out of the spotlight, that doesn’t mean he wants to avoid being in a relationship all together.
“If you’re in a committed monogamous relationship, there’s something very beautiful about the sacrifice of other possibilities,” The Social Network alum told Bustle in November 2021. “You make that connection sacred and it intensifies the joy of it and the specialness of it.”
And Andrew tries to protect that sacredness by keeping his private life, well, private.
“I’m not in the public eye to a great degree because I’ve designed it that way for myself,” he continued. “For my work, I’m fine with it, but otherwise I fight for my right for a private, personal life. My right to be ordinary. My right to be a mess. My right to be sorrowful. My right to lose, to get it wrong, to be stupid, to be a person.”
However, it would be hard for anyone with a celeb-filled dating history—even a superhero—to shield their personal world from the limelight. In the past, Andrew has been linked to Emma Stone, Rita Ora and more stars. And while some may have shipped him with Amelia Dimoldenberg following their flirty exchanges on her show and the red carpet, she recently suggested it’s not in the cards.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen,” the Chicken Shop Date host told The New Yorker in an interview published Feb. 24, “otherwise I would be going out with him already, wouldn’t I?”

- Monica Barbaro
If you’ve been on the internet, then you’re aware those romance rumors about Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro aren’t a complete unknown.
The We Live in Time actor and the A Complete Unknown actress sparked dating speculation after a social media user shared a video of the pair attending Jonathan Bailey‘s performance of Richard II atLondon’s Bridge Theatre Feb. 19.
However, this wouldn’t be the first time Monica and Andrew had crossed paths. They were also photographed alongside Eddie Redmayne and W Magazine‘s Editor-at-Large Lynn Hirschberg at the outlet’s Annual Best Performances Party in Los Angeles January 4.
E! News reached out to Monica and Andrew’s reps for comment but didn’t hear back.
Dr. Kate Tomas
Fans’ social networks alerted them to Andrew’s romance with Dr. Kate Tomas after the two were seen on an apparent double date with Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham in March 2024.
“I am in a new relationship,” the spiritual mentor said on a June 2024 episode of her podcast The Friday Emails without naming names, per The Sunday Times, “and I’m in love and I’m really happy.”
However, she didn’t love that the media mostly focused on her relationship with the Oscar nominee.
“It’s frustrating that no matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man,” Kate told The Sunday Times in a July 2024 interview. “I don’t want to sit under anybody’s shadow.”
Nor did the philosopher want to deal with the barrage of public scrutiny and judgment that came with dating in the spotlight.
The way she saw it, photographers “will take maybe 150 pictures, then they choose the four where you look worst,” she continued, calling out the “misogynistic nature of that interest—criticism of how a woman looks, of what [she] does for work.”
However, Kate and Andrew’s relationship didn’t last long. In October 2024, she confirmed on Instagram that they “broke up months ago.”
Olivia Brower
While neither Olivia Brower nor Andrew ever publicly commented on dating rumors, The Amazing Spider-Man star and the model found themselves tangled in a web of speculation after Page Six published photos of them hugging and appearing to share a kiss in January 2024.
Alyssa Miller
Nearly three months after Alyssa Miller and Andrew first sparked romance rumors in November 2021 by walking hand in hand in New York, E! News confirmed the 1984 alum and the model were dating.
The two “were certainly happy in each other’s company,” a source told E! News in February 2022 after Andrew and Alyssa were spotted on a tennis court in Malibu, Calif., “and not hiding anything.”
At the SAG Awards later that month, the pair made their red carpet debut as a couple.
But in April 2022, a source close to the situation confirmed to E! News that Andrew and Alyssa had parted ways. Shortly after the news spread, she addressed the topic herself.
“If you must gossip at least use a cute photo,” Alyssa captioned a selfie of the duo. “Lol love you AG.”
Aisling Bea
Aisling Bea and Andrew had fans buzzing after he was photographed with his arm around her at a performance of Hamilton in London in March 2019. Still, the tick, tick… BOOM! actor and comedian never publicly commented on the romance rumors.
Rita Ora
In November 2018, fans started to wonder if Rita Ora and Andrew had struck up a romance—with their sightings together, including a Christmas Eve stroll in London, only fueling speculation. Still, the singer and The Social Network star stayed tight lipped on where they stood—with her even dodging a question about whether she preferred Andrew or Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.
“You’re making me wake up this morning,” she said on a 2019 episode of The Morning Mash Up. “I don’t watch Spider-Man. That’s my answer.”
But by March 2019—before his sighting with Aisling—reports spread that Andrew and Rita (who is now married to Taika Waititi) split.
Susie Abromeit
Things appeared to be heating up between Susie Abromeit and Andrew as they were spotted kissing on a beach in Malibu, Calif. in September 2018. And earlier that month, the Hacksaw Ridge star and the Jessica Jones actress had been seen at Disneyland together.
However, the romance rumors soon fizzled, and neither Andrew nor Susie ever commented on the dating speculation.
Emma Stone
Emma Stone and Andrew’s bond went from friendly, neighborhood costars to a loving couple after they worked together on The Amazing Spider-Man in 2011.
“It’s a dream to work with him,” the Oscar winner said in a 2014 interview with ABC News. “He’s obviously one of the greatest actors I think we have alive today, and he’s also just a remarkable human being. So, I love him very much.”
Emma and Andrew gave fans glimpses into their love on red carpets, at award shows, during her 2014 SNL hosting gig and on their many NYC dates (including one where they held up cards championing causes they cared about after spotting photographers).
But in 2015, news broke that Emma and Andrew split. Still, the La La Land star—who is now married to Dave McCary— and the Mainstream actor continue to be on good terms.
“We care about each other so much, and that’s a given, that’s kind of this unconditional thing,” he said on a 2017 episode of Vanity Fair‘s Little Gold Men podcast. “There’s so much love between us and so much respect…I’m her biggest fan as an artist. So for me, it’s been bliss to be able to watch her success and watch her bloom into the actress that she is. And it’s also been wonderful to have that kind of support for each other. It’s nothing but a beautiful thing.”
- Shannon Woodward
- Shannon Woodward had been dating Andrew before he skyrocketed to fame with The Social Network.
“I think my girlfriend is proud of me and the fact that I’ve remained grounded,” he told Parade in 2010, the year of the film’s debut. “I think I’m just busier. That’s the main thing. I haven’t got as much time to mope about and complain that I’m bored. She travels with me when she’s not working. Whenever we have time, we’re together. When I’m on my own, you’d find me in the ocean surfing.”
But after three years together, the Under the Banner of Heaven alum and the Raising Hope actress parted ways.
