While you may know her as Kelly Kapoor or Mindy Lahiri onscreen, it turns out Mindy Kaling goes by a few different names offscreen.
And that’s a choice that The Office alum—born Vera Mindy Chokalingam—made early on in her career.
However, Mindy gave fans a glimpse of the initials she prefers to use in real life in an Instagram Story on Feb. 23. While preparing for a flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco, she showed off a red, monogrammed luggage tag with the initials VMK attached to her suitcase—revealing that she apparently uses a hybrid of her real name and stage name in her personal life.
Although the luggage tag still uses the K for Kaling, it still acknowledges the V in Vera, her birth name.
It wasn’t until she started her career in stand-up comedy that the Never Have I Ever creator thought to change her moniker for work.
“Emcees for these comedy shows would have trouble pronouncing it, and then they’d make a joke about my last name,” she shared with NPR in 2020. “As a performer, these comedians would just butcher it and then be like, ‘I don’t know what it is! Just this girl, Mindy.'”
While she had mixed feelings about leaving her name—which represents her South Indian heritage—out of the spotlight, she ultimately decided it was beneficial to do so.
“When you do comedy—everyone from Albert Brooks, Woody Allen—these are all comedians who changed their names,” she explained. “I felt it was the easiest thing for me to do.”
The Mindy Project creator still believes changing her last name was worth it, adding, “It’s bittersweet, but I have to say, it was such a help to my career to have a name that people could pronounce.”
It may have paid off, as Mindy Kaling became a household name when she kicked off her career as an actress and writer on The Office in 2005—just four years after she graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in playwriting.
And just last week, she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“Yesterday was one of the most special days of my life,” she captioned her photo on Instagram. “I was told after receiving my star that I was the first South Asian woman to have a star on the Walk of Fame. I’m humbled by that. I am so proud to be South Asian and I want to make my community proud of everything I do but more importantly I want to help usher in the next generation of South Asian stars – who are already making a huge impact across the world.”

Sterling Kelby Brown
Sterling K. Brown went by his middle name Kelby until he was a teenager.
“My dad’s name is Sterling Brown Jr., my grandfather is Sterling Brown Sr.,” he said during an April 2025 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I wanted my own name and it felt like Sterling was an old man’s name.”
But years after his dad died from a heart attack, the This Is Us alum decided to revert back to his first name as a way to honor his father.
“Because he passed away when I was 10, by the time I turned 16 and I hadn’t heard his name for five, five-and-a-half years,” he continued. “I was like, ‘I kinda just want to hear that name again.’ So I asked people to call me Sterling.”
