Karen Pittman knows this Judy Blume classic is going to be loved forever.

One month after Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming series Forever, the actress shared what fans can expect in the first love story of Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone).

“It’s a coming-of-age story about these two young kids who are learning how to be in love,” Karen told E! News’ Will Marfuggi on the 2025 SAG Awards red carpet Feb. 23. “It’s about families, the love that we share with each other and how parents get raised up in the process of letting their children go out into the world.” (See all the stars on the red carpet here.)

The show follows the story of Justin and Keisha in 2018 Los Angeles as they experience the ups and downs of a young romance. Despite reading the 1975 novel that inspired the series when she was younger, the 38-year-old—who stars as Justin’s mom Dawn—admitted, “At the time, I didn’t realize how spicy it was.”

“Having seen these eight episodes on Netflix,” she quipped, “I’m like, ‘Should my kids watch this? Maybe it’s a little too spicy.'”

Nonetheless, Karen believes Mara Brock Akil’s latest project will be well-loved. As she put it, “I think everyone is really going to enjoy it.”

For Mara, reimagining the beloved classic has been a dream come true.

“Judy Blume’s ability to capture the real emotions we experience during the various rites of passage of our youth influenced my life choices and writing voice,” the show’s writer shared in a January press release. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity of a lifetime to partner with a childhood icon and bring this story to my Netflix home, where the idea of your first love being with you Forever is shared with the world through the lens of Black love.”
