Zooey Deschanel’skids are taking some big inspiration from their mom.
As the New Girl alum walked the red carpet of the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards Feb. 23 alongside her fiancé Jonathan Scott, she shared that her daughter Elsie, 9, and son Charlie, 7—with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik—have been exploring new passions and dabbling in her area of expertise. “They’re really into making little movies,” Zooey exclusively told E! News correspondent Will Marfuggi at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. “They love movies. We watched TheMaltese Falcon with them the other day, and they were totally into it.”
While both of her kids were able to appreciate the 1941 noir film, it seems the Elf actress’ youngest took a particular interest in honoring the classics.
“They love black and white films,” she continued. “Our 7-year-old watches Godzilla movies in Japanese and he’ll cry if it’s dubbed into English.”
And the Property Brothers star—who has been engaged to the (500) Days of Summer actress since 2023—expressed that the kids’ interests are no surprise given her movie-making family. After all, Zooey’s dad Caleb Deschanel is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer while her mom Mary Jo Deschanel and sister Emily Deschanel are actors themselves.
“Which I would expect with the history of film in your family,” Jonathan added in the joint interview. “I feel like they have to keep the bar raised.”
As for how Zooey and Jonathan fit into Elsie and Charlie’s newfound creative endeavors? While the HGTV star has been named the “set captain” as he takes on his contractor role at home, Zooey has taken on a slightly bigger role.
“I make little short films with them,” she explained, adding that she occasionally stars in and directs some of their passion projects, “but then they start doing them on their own too, so it’s kinda awesome.”
