A documentary about Ukrainian ballet dancers is heading to audiences from executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker.
Director Miriam Guttmann’s feature Front Row is set to debut via streaming platform Marquee TV on Dec. 8, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned. The movie premiered at last year’s Doc NYC film festival.
Front Row focuses on the members of the United Ukrainian Ballet Company who aim to keep the nation’s culture alive through their performance amid Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine. The film includes the introduction of one new member of the troupe: a soldier who recently lost his legs in battle and seeks to dance with prosthetics.
Guttmann (Seeds of Deceit) helmed the feature that hails from Scenery and was produced in collaboration with Banijay Rights. Lea Fels and Isidoor Roebers serve as producers. Parker executive produces alongside Alison Benson, Bart Meuter and Jay Ruderman.
“Front Row is a heartrending and inspiring reflection on the power of art, following an extraordinary company of dancers as they confront the realities of war,” Parker says. “It is a true privilege to share this film with audiences around the world.”
Marquee TV is a global streaming platforms for the arts. Its programming includes opera, dance, theater and music performances.
“As a documentary filmmaker, I’m always looking for multi-layered, character-driven stories with a strong sense of urgency,” Guttmann told The Moveable Feast in an interview about the forthcoming project. “This story distinguishes itself from this type of narrative by interweaving the current war in Ukraine with the power of art.”
