SkyShowtime Renews Sweden Original Hit ‘Where the Sun Always Shines’ for Season 2

SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture of Paramount and Sky owner Comcast, will bring back Swedish hit original series Where the Sun Always Shines for a second season.

The dark Swedish dramedy, created and directed by Felix Herngren (Sunny Side, Bonus Family), is filmed on location in Mallorca. It has “quickly become one of the platform’s standout performers of the year, driven by its blend of dark humor and emotional depth,” the streamer said on Thursday. “Within its first three weeks, the series delivered high engagement and strong viewer retention across SkyShowtime markets and ranked as the most-watched title in Sweden this year, underscoring its strong local appeal.”

The series follows Tom (Per Lasson) and Petra (Lisa Linnertorp), “a successful couple who built up a large Ica Maxi store in Nyköping and sold it for a record sum,” reads a synopsis. “They have been living a life of luxury in Mallorca with their sons for a month, ready to enjoy an eternal vacation. But their lives take an unexpected turn during Tom’s 50th birthday party, leading his brother Timmy (Erik “Jerka” Johansson) and his wife Maja (Rakel Wärmländer) to move their family to the sunny climes of Mallorca, where chaos ensues.”

Veronika was SkyShowtime’s first original series renewal, with the second season premiering on Dec. 8, and season 3 having also just been unveiled.

”The response to Where the Sun Always Shines has been incredible, with viewership in Sweden in particular exceeding our expectations,” said Kai Finke, chief content officer at SkyShowtime, who unveiled the renewal at the Content London industry gathering on Thursday. “Audiences have truly connected with the show’s dark humor, the very real cultural clashes and the dreams that inspired it.”

Said series creator and director Herngren: “I’m enormously glad to be able to keep building and exploring life as an expat here on the island. Mallorca may be one of Europe’s most beautiful corners, but it also has a quiet mystery to it – the kind that somehow finds its way into your inner depths and your trickiest challenges. I’m also deeply grateful that the audience has found the series and received it so warmly, and to SkyShowtime for a fantastic collaboration and for believing in this slightly odd and wonderful project so wholeheartedly. ”
