BAFTA Film Awards Go on a Thrill Ride as ‘One Battle After Another’ Leads ‘Sinners’ by One Nomination

The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards nominations, unveiled in London on Tuesday, have set up a thrill ride for the British Academy honors, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s political thriller One Battle After Another earning 14 nods, narrowly edging out Ryan Coogler’s vampire film Sinners with 13.

In the recent Oscar nominations, Sinners came out on top with a record-breaking 16 noms, compared with 13 for One Battle After Another.

Chloé Zhao’s Shakespearean heartbreaker Hamnet and Josh Safdie’s ping-pong caper Marty Supreme earned 11 BAFTA nods each on Tuesday. Joachim Trier’s drama Sentimental Value and Guillermo del Toro’s gothic epic Frankenstein earned eight BAFTA noms each, and Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy Bugonia and Kirk Jones’ Tourette Syndrome advocate dramedy I Swear received five each.

In the best film category, the BAFTA contenders are Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value, and Sinners.

Competing for the Outstanding British Film BAFTA will be 28 Years Later, The Ballad of Wallis Island, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Die My Love, H Is for Hawk, Hamnet, I Swear, Mr Burton, Pillion, and Steve.

In the best director category, Coogler (Sinners) and Safdie (Marty Supreme) are first-time nominees. They will compete with Lanthimos (Bugonia), Zhao (Hamnet), Anderson (One Battle After Another), and Trier (Sentimental Value).

The first-time BAFTA nominees in the performance categories are Robert Aramayo, Odessa A’zion, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Michael B. Jordan, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsgård, and Teyana Taylor.

In the leading actress category, Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) and Infiniti (One Battle After Another) are nominated alongside Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).

In the leading actor race, Aramayo (I Swear) and Jordan (Sinners) join Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia).

The supporting actress category sees BAFTA newbies A’zion (Marty Supreme), Lilleaas (Sentimental Value) and Taylor (One Battle After Another) joined by Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), Carey Mulligan (The Ballad of Wallis Island), and Emily Watson (Hamnet).

And first-time BAFTA nominee Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) is part of a big-name lineup for the supporting actor honor, alongside Benicio Del Toro (One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), the Oscar-snubbed Paul Mescal (Hamnet), Peter Mullan (I Swear), and Sean Penn (One Battle After Another).

Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good, which was snubbed in the Oscar noms, is in the running for two craft (costume design for Paul Tazewell, and make up & hair for Frances Hannon, Laura Blount, Mark Coulier, Sarah Nuth), but no acting or other categories.

Shut out from any BAFTA nominations, just like at the Oscars, were Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler and Laura Dern; Scott Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White andJeremy Strong; Mona Fastvold’s The Testament of Ann Lee, starring Amanda Seyfried; and Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice.

Joseph Kosinski’s F1, a surprise Oscar best film nominee, came away with three craft and technical BAFTA nods, namely for editing (Stephen Mirrione), sound (Gareth John, Al Nelson, Juan Peralt, Gary A. Rizzo, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle),  and special visual effects (Ryan Tudhope, Keith Alfred Dawson, Nicolas Chevallier, Robert Harrington).

Earlier this month, the longlists for each BAFTA category — the results of the first round of voting for the honors — were unveiled, led by One Battle After Another with 16 mentions, and Hamnet and Sinners with 14 each.

“Huge congratulations to the teams behind the 46 superb films nominated today,” said Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA. “They showcase the very best of storytelling and its ability to engage, entertain and provoke debate.” Added Sara Putt, chair of BAFTA: “Across the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards nominations, it is thrilling to see British indie films and debuts in the company of blockbusters that have taken the world by storm. It’s an exceptional year for bold, original storytelling.”

At the BAFTA Film Awards 2025, Conclave (best film) and The Brutalist (best director and actor) won four honors each.

This year’s BAFTA winners will receive their awards at the 79th BAFTA film awards ceremony, set to take place Sunday, Feb. 22, at London’s Royal Festival Hall. After Scottish star David Tennant (Doctor WhoInside Man) led through the ceremony for two years in a row, this year, Scottish actor, writer and host Alan Cumming, the presenter and producer of The Traitors U.S., will host the BAFTA awards show.

Who will the BAFTAs go to? David Jonsson and Aimee Lou Wood revealed the nominees in the British capital at midday on Tuesday. Check out the full list of nominations for the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards below.
