Before Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes rolled up the welcome mat on their romance, they were celebrating major milestones together.
Just two days before a rep for the “Dibs” singer confirmed to E! News that she and the Outer Banks star had ended their nearly three-year romance, Chase rang in Kelsea’s 32nd birthday with a message about her year ahead—one that seemed to include him in it.
“Although you keep saying you’re not excited for 32,” Chase captioned the Sept. 12 Instagram photo dump, which included a New York Knicks date night, a private jet selfie and a photo of their shadows giving the finger, ”I’d say I’m lookin’ forward to more of this.”
He added, “Happy birthday my love.”
However, it seems this year will kick of Kelsea’s new era as a single woman.
E! News reached out to reps for Kelsea and Chase regarding their breakup but has not yet heard back.
In the weeks leading up to their split, the duo had faced breakup speculation when Kelsea deleted some social media posts that included Chase. Though he seemed to shut that talk down with a sweet pic of her dog Dibs on social media.
Since confirming their romance in March 2023, Chase, who turns 33 on Sept. 16, had often given fans front-row look into their romance, with sweet red carpet date nights and social media shoutouts. But as the Uglies actor previously stressed, that was just a fraction of their life together.
“Sometimes it feels like maybe it’s an oversharing situation, or maybe there’s a lot of details,” Chase told E! News last September, “but I truthfully believe that my personal life is really, really private. For the most part, I still feel like I have a really good grasp on my privacy.”
After all, both Chase and Kelsea are no strangers to public romances, with him dating his Outer Banks costar Madelyn Cline for a year until their 2021 breakup and the “Cowboys Cry Too” singer and ex-husband Morgan Evans finalizing their divorce in 2022.
Beyond navigating life in the spotlight together, Chase also served as inspiration for her 2024 album Patterns, including her song “First Rodeo.”
“He’s such a pillar of this record and obviously of my life,” Kelsea explained to E! News in October 2024. “I feel like it was this beautiful ode to him and to us.”
At that point, nearly two years into their journey together, they were definitely enjoying the ride.
“We’ve both learned a lot from it,” she continued, “and we’ve both really challenged each other to become a better partner for each other, and also just for ourselves. We’re proper teammates now.”

Set to her song “How Do I Do This,” which is about going on a first date after many years, Kelsea modeled her outfit in the video.
“Here’s the look, with the boots” Kelsea said while checking herself out in a full-length mirror.
Turning around to showcase her half-up, half-down hairstyle, she added, “We’ve got the hair clip, because we’re trying to be a cool girl.”
She continued speaking to an unnamed friend, explaining, “He’s picking me up and we’re going to a sushi place and I’ll call you tomorrow and for a full update.”
Taking a deep breath and raising one arm and finger in the air, she finally said, “I can do this. I can do this.”
And, after doing a little dance, she proclaimed, “It’s just a date. You just go and you just eat food and you talk about things that you do, OK?”
