In just 72 days, Kris Humphries‘ world changed forever.
It was within that 10-week time frame that his marriage to Kim Kardashian began and then quickly came to an end when she filed for divorce.
“Certain things happen in life,” Humphries explained on a December 2011 episode of Good Morning America, “and you gotta move forward.”
But even 14 years after the basketball player and the reality star tied the knot, fans can’t help but revisit the past.
Kardashian and Humphries’ whirlwind romance began near the end of 2010, and they got engaged months later in May 2011. The two tied the knot that August at a private estate in Montecito, Calif., with the bride wearing a custom Vera Wang gown and the ceremony airing on the E! special Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event.
Except it wasn’t a fairy tale. At the wedding rehearsal, Kardashian’s mom Kris Jenner even offered to help her get out of walking down the aisle.
“What you said to me is, ‘Go! I’m going to put you in a car. No one will find you. Just leave, and I’ll handle it,'” the SKIMS mogul recalled of that night during the 2021 Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion. “And I thought, ‘OK, we’re filming this for a TV show. If I leave, I’m going to be known as the runaway bride forever and it’s gonna be a huge joke, and I think I just have cold feet.'”
Kardashian said she felt pressure to go through with the televised wedding as she didn’t want to let people down. Still, she insists that, despite Humphries’ request for an annulment citing “fraud,” their decision to wed in the first place wasn’t some “fake” publicity stunt.
However, it wasn’t long before she realized she shouldn’t have said “I do.”
“We get to Italy for our honeymoon, and I was like, ‘F–k, I think I made the wrong decision,'” Kardashian continued. And when they moved in together in New York, she added, she was “miserable.”
Looking back at how they broke up, Kardashian admits she would’ve handled things differently and that she owes her ex an apology.
“I was so nervous to break up with someone. I handled it totally the wrong way,” the44-year-old shared at the reunion. “I fully broke up with him in the worst way, and I just didn’t know how to deal. I learned so much from it.”
As for why Kardashian and Humphries split, she suggested it wasn’t the result of one big thing but rather that they simply didn’t know each other that well.
“I think obviously when people first meet and they fall in love, everything is great at the beginning,” she told Oprah Winfrey in 2012. “And for me, I didn’t spend more than I think a full week with my ex before we got married. We never lived together.”
And once they did live together, she continued, she just knew “he was not the one.”
Their union dissolved not through an annulment but through a divorce, which was finalized in 2013 and marked Kardashian’s second after having previously been married to Damon Thomas. As part of their split, she gave Humphries back her massive engagement ring that was later auctioned off for $749,000.
“I didn’t keep that,” Kardashian—who went on to wed and welcome four children with now-ex-husband Kanye West—said about the emerald-cut stunner on a March episode of The Kardashians. “I was pregnant with North, still married to him, and in order to divorce him, he said I had to give him the ring in my divorce—that I bought, he contributed a fifth.”
For his part, Humphries has also stated that their marriage, while short, was real—as were the difficulties of dealing with all the public attention.
“Look, I should have known what I was getting into,” the 40-year-old wrote in a 2019 essay for The Players’ Tribune, in which he announced his retirement from the NBA. “I was definitely naïve about how much my life was going to change. But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake.”
Because “there’s definitely a lot about that world that is not entirely real,” he added. “But our actual relationship was 100% real.”
“When it was clear that it wasn’t working … what can I say? It sucked,” Humphries continued. “It’s never easy to go through the embarrassment of something like that—with your friends, with your family…. But when it plays out so publicly, in front of the world, it’s a whole other level. It was brutal.”
So brutal, he noted, that he “was in a dark place” for about a year in which he didn’t want to leave his home and it felt like “the whole world hates you.”
“I didn’t want to be Kris Humphries,” the former forward wrote. “It’s the craziest feeling in the world, not wanting to be yourself. And I didn’t even want to say anything to defend myself, because it felt like I couldn’t win. You can’t go up against the tabloids. You can’t go up against that machine. There’s no point.”
And while Humphries acknowledged “most people will always see me as That F****** Guy from TV,” he expressed his hope that they will still remember his contributions to the game.
“Because that’s all I ever wanted to be known for,” he added. “Even now, since I’ve stepped away from the game, I’m trying to stay under the radar and work on a new phase of my life.”
This new phase included entering a different professional arena. In his 2019 essay, Humphries shared that he was “about to open 7 Crisp & Green restaurants across the Midwest” and that he’d “already opened 10 Five Guys franchises and counting.” The athlete has also opened several Dave’s Hot Chicken stores in his home state of Minnesota with his family.
When he’s not working, Humphries enjoys traveling and spending time with his loved ones out on the water (his Instagram features photos of him boating in East Hampton, N.Y.; Miami, Fla.; Malibu, Calif., and Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka).
He’s also found a new sport that he loves: Pickleball.
“During COVID, it was just like people were looking for things to do,” Humphries explained to Pickleballtv in November 2024. “A friend who actually plays a lot of volleyball was getting into pickleball. So he just brought me and tried it out and it was fun. You know, I’d played a little bit of tennis in 7th and 8th grade but nothing on a high level. Pickleball’s a lot of fun, just competitive and exciting once I got past the fact that it’s a wiffle ball.”
And while his relationship status is unknown, it’s clear his two pups Ricardo and Rocky have his heart.
As for where the Kardashians and Jenners stand in their love lives, keep reading to keep up.
Kris Jenner
Why, yes, Kris Jenner and longtime love Corey Gamble are still doing amazing, sweetie. In 2014, the music industry insider approached the world’s most famous momager at fashion designer Riccardo Tisci‘s 40th birthday bash in Ibiza and “I just tried saying, ‘You’re beautiful. I’d love to get to know you,'” he shared on the family’s OG series, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, “and it went from there.”
Kourtney Kardashian
With all due respect for all the small things, Kourtney Kardashian‘s husband has made some pretty grand gestures throughout their yearlong marriage. Take her 44th birthday that saw her and Travis Barker take a trip up the California coast to Santa Barbara. The Blink-182 drummer marked the occasion by filling their room at the famed Kennedy Cottage with rose petals and gifting her with a $161,819 piece by artist Yoshitomo Nara.
The Poosh founder has fully embraced her new life as the girl at the rock show. And in November 2023, she and Travis welcomed their first child together, son Rocky Thirteen Barker.
Kim Kardashian
As Kim Kardashian put it in a trailer of The Kardashians, “Things change really quickly.” When season two wrapped, the SKIMS founder was still living it up with then-Saturday Night Live standout Pete Davidson.
She later got fans hoping she was getting back in the dating game with retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady.
Alas, the mom to North West, Saint West, Chicago West and Psalm West—with ex-husband Kanye West—wasn’t on the hunt for a new teammate. “They have friends and business partners in common, but [are] not dating,” a source told E! News in May 2023. “Kim is very focused on her kids, her businesses, law school and preparing for American Horror Story.”
She briefly dated Odell Beckham Jr. until news broke of their split in April 2024.
As a source told E!, Kim is “open to finding love again if she meets the right person.”
Khloe Kardashian
In a 2023 episode, Kris shoots her shot while chatting with Khloe Kardashian about Tristan Thompson, asking, “How’s everything going with Tristan?” Safe to say the Good American founder has the basketball player benched for now. Though the exes have worked out a game plan for raising daughter True and son Tatum, Khloe shot down the idea that they’re back together in May 2023, calling the narrative “tiring.”
She’s more interested in starting a fresh story. After meeting Love Is Blind star Alexa Lemieux the following April, Khloe pitched a winning idea to Netflix, writing on Instagram, “I think some of us single K sisters should go on LIB. What do you think?”
Kendall Jenner
Months after Kendall Jenner‘s split with NBA guard Devin Booker in fall 2022, the model’s love life got an assist from friends Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber. The married duo were spotted enjoying a double date with the reality star and musician Bad Bunny in February 2023. The following December, it was reported that the two had called it quits.
Kylie Jenner
Seems Kylie Jenner has found herself a new beautiful boy. Last seen publicly with rapper Travis Scott—dad to her daughter Stormi and son Aire—at an Art Basel party in December 2022, the beauty mogul, has been linked to Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet since April 2023. Now, rise and shine because you don’t want to miss the glimpses they’ve given us of their romance at New York Fashion Week and the US Open, as well as live on TV, when they showed PDA while seated together at the 2024 Golden Globes and 2025 Oscars.
