Ben Napier and Erin Napier aren’t renovating their home rules.
Indeed, the HGTV stars revealed they may have an unpopular parenting move when it comes to teaching their daughters Helen, 7, and Mae, 4, how to celebrate their birthdays.
“Our rule is,” Ben, 41, told Today in an interview published on Sept. 9, “until they’re old enough to plan it themselves, it’s supper at grandparents.”
Erin echoed the sentiment, noting she’d rather their kids have a small get together than a jam-packed extravaganza.
“If your 4-year-old’s birthday party looks like a wedding, what do they have to look forward to?” the 40-year-old explained in the joint interview. “Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think there’s a lot of moms out there who feel the same way I do.”
However, that doesn’t mean the Home Town co-hosts—who got married in November 2008—haven’t planned a large event for Helen and Mae in the past. In fact, the couple revealed that they tried to throw a few parties, but it immediately became chaotic as there were “100 kids running around, losing their minds.”
“It’s stressful and loud,” Ben recalled. “I was like, ‘We’re not doing this.”
But it seems their daughters are fond of the smaller celebrations—even when they’re not at a family member’s home. Last June, Ben and Erin hosted a cheetah-inspired party for Helen’s 6th birthday at their local park. And true to the theme, the duo decorated the small setup with animal print balloons, pink gift bags, food, and an iced-brown cake that featured a cheetah on the top.
“Helen is turning 6, and mom and dad threw a fun party on the playground,” Erin captioned the Instagram post at the time, adding a sweet photo of their daughter sitting near her presents. “Can’t believe our oldest baby is so G R O W N.”
