And Just Like That…Carrie Bradshaw’s story is finished.
Michael Patrick King said goodbye to the iconic writer (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) on Aug. 14 with the series finale of the Sex and the City revival—and he’s happy where he left them.
“I really do want people to understand that this was about telling these stories and bringing them to a place where there was a finish,” Michael told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Aug. 14. “And by ‘finish,’ I mean an open-ended finish, where each of the characters’ lives could continue and you could feel good about it for all of them. It’s what you want to write now that we’re done. We’re done writing.”
In the end, the trio of women—who along with Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) were introduced to the world in 1998—all settled into their lives with their families and loves. For Carrie, that meant a love with herself and her Gramercy Park home, which was a shift from her ending in SATC when saw her starting her life with Mr. Big (Chris Noth).
“Who Carrie was at the end of Sex and the City and who she is at the end of And Just Like That is someone who has had great growth, great life experience,” Michael explained. “Now she’s ready to say the very shocking sentence, ‘Maybe just me,’ which she says to Charlotte in that beautiful scene where Sarah Jessica was just so emotional about saying that.”
He added, “So it’s really about the character, where they’ve been and where you want to leave them. This is where we wanted to leave her.”
And for Michael, he couldn’t help but wonder if fans would catch the callback to Carrie’s first ending.
“The last line: The Woman realized she wasn’t alone. She was on her own. That’s it,” Michael told THR. “That is what I wanted to say as an echo and a callback and a response to the finale of Sex and the City.”
What’s more, Sarah Jessica —who bid adieu to Carrie with an emotional Instagram tribute—got the ending that she desired.
“Leave a party while it’s still fun, right? No comma” Michael said. “You can hear it in her Instagram… that tone in her voice is such a goodbye. It’s so beautiful.”

“And just like that…the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” Michael said in an Aug 1 Instagram post. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That…season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
“SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season,” he added. “It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”
