While the Hacks star drew laughs at the 2025 MTV VMAs Sept. 7 speaking from stage dressed as a coffee filter, there was at least one social media user who couldn’t correctly identify her (though they kept trying).
Sharing a picture of Megan and Ariana Grande posing together at the event, the user captioned the post to X (formerly Twitter), “Ariana Grande with Ava Max.”
In a follow up, the user wrote alongside pictures of the pair hugging, “Ariana Grande with Keshaor something at the #VMAs.”
Finally, the fan threw in the towel, writing, “I can’t figure out who the f–k this is cus apparently it’s not ava max either.”
Megan—known for her viral red carpet fashion, including her Diet Coke outfit at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards—shared screenshots of the posts to her Instagram, which prompted a hilarious response from the Wicked actress herself.
“‘Kesha or something,’” Ari quoted in her comment on the post. She also wrote to Megan in another comment, “i love you sm.”
Other stars chimed in, too, with Amy Schumer writing, “Hilar,” and Saltburn actor Archie Madekwe commenting four laugh-crying emojis.
Beyond sharing the funny moment with the Too Much actress, Ariana had a busy night at the VMAs. She attended the ceremony with her mom Joan Grande, brother Frankie Grande and his husband Hale Grande, as well as her dad Edward Butera, who she thanked in her acceptance speech after her video “Brighter Days Ahead” won the Moon Person for Best Pop (Ariana also won for Video of the Year).
“Thank you to my dad who acted in this video for the first time in his life,” she said. “He is the best scene partner and dad in the world.”
In addition to thanking her fans and team, she concluded her speech with a now-viral moment.
“Thank you to my therapists,” Ariana continued, “and gay people. I love you. Thank you.”
