Sydney Chandler now has clearer eyes going into Hollywood.
The 29-year-old daughter of Kyle Chandler addressed why she was recently excluded from a Variety cover of the Alien: Earth cast despite being on the FX sci-fi series, explaining that she “did not know at the time it was a dealbreaker” to decline participating in an on-camera game with her costars with the outlet.
“It was really unfortunate,” Sydney told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Aug. 12. “I really wanted to be there for the photo shoot, and I was ready to talk anything and everything Alien.”
Sydney said she turned down starring in the video, in which her costars Timothy Olyphant and Noah Hawley answered personal questions about each other, because she “felt uncomfortable doing something like that.”
“Again, new to this; I haven’t done something like that before,” she added. “Unfortunately, I was uninvited from the rest of the shoot. I never meant to offend.”
In a statement to EW, a spokesperson for Variety said the magazine “invited Sydney on our cover to celebrate her performance in Alien: Earth. We were clear from the start that our offer included video, and we continued to negotiate with her team through the morning of the shoot to see if she would participate.”
Looking back at the situation, Sydney—who was raised outside of the public spotlight in Austin, Texas—admitted she’s still “figuring this world out” as she pursues an acting career.
“I’m figuring out how much of my personal self I need to give, I want to give, I feel comfortable giving,” she explained. “It’s a really personal journey.”
That’s why the actress, who also held a supporting role in 2022’s Don’t Worry Darling, said she’s “learning a heck of a lot” during the promotional tour of her new show.
“Once this is completed,” Sydney added, “I’ll have a bit of a foundation and be able to go from there.”
