Kerry Washington has no plans on turning the camera on her home life.
The Scandal alum and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha have kept their personal lives with their two children Isabelle, 11, and Caleb, 9, offline, and it’s a choice that at first, wasn’t all that easy.
“It was very hard at the beginning,” Kerry told InStyle in an interview published Sept. 8. “I’d look at a picture of my kid and send it to my mother: ‘This picture has to be in the world, but I don’t want to post it!’ When [my kids] started going to school and I knew I couldn’t protect them every moment of the day, it was scary.”
“Our kids get to be who they are,” Kerry—who married Nnamdi, also dad to a teenage daughter—added. “not who the world has decided they are.”
Indeed, while the Little Fires Everywhere star purposefully has kept her kids out of the spotlight, she admitted that it trickled into her and her husband’s love life as well.
“We live our lives and we are in the public eye, but we are still fairly private,” she said. “Almost two years ago, we were at a couture show in Italy, and the house crew took a picture of us. I said to him, ‘This picture is so beautiful. I want to post this picture.’ And he was like, “Really?’”
She added, “We had been married 10 years and never posted a picture of ourselves together. We are both the kind of actors who are often trying to tell as much truth as possible behind the mask of the character. I feel like we are more protective of our real truth. That’s not for public consumption.”
And while her children won’t make an appearance on social media, Kerry isn’t shy when sharing the types of values she and Nnamdi are building for them, noting to Marie Claire in 2023, “I try to show up as the person they need to help them be the best versions of themselves.”
Kerry recently broke her family’s privacy rule slightly as she celebrated Nnamdi on the release of his latest film The Knife. Indeed, Kerry panned the camera to the NFL pro-turned actor, as she sang his praises in the film over the summer.
“I’m here with the writer, director, producer,” she said in a Aug. 12 Instagram video. “And actor of The Knife.”
Alongside the hilarious video, Kerry wrote, “He wouldn’t give me an interview… But he did say ‘go see @theknifefilm in theaters August 15th!’”
