Song Young-kyu, South Korean Actor, Dead at 55

Friends and family are mourning the loss of South Korean actor Song Young-kyu.

The Extreme Job star was found unresponsive inside a parked car near Seoul, South Korea, by an acquaintance on August 4, local authorities confirmed to Variety. He was 55.

Police have since confirmed to the outlet that there were no signs of foul play and that no suicide note was found.

According to authorities, the car was parked in a residential complex in Cheoin-gu, Yougon, which is about 25 miles from Seoul. His body was found around 8 a.m. local time.

E! News has reached out to Song’s reps for comment but has not heard back.

Two months before his tragic passing, the Narco-Saints actor was involved in a DUI incident in which he drove about three miles with a blood-alcohol level above the limit to have his license revoked in South Korea, according to Variety. He was awaiting indictment at the time of his death.

In the months following the incident, the actor was removed from three projects, per the outlet, including dramas The Defects and The Winning Try as well as a stage production of Shakespeare in Love.

At the beginning of his career, Song made his stage debut in the 1994 children’s musical Wizard Mureul. In the following three decades, he cemented his legacy in entertainment by appearing in more than 40 television dramas numerous films.

Most notably, the 55-year-old became known for his role as Chief Choi in Extreme Job—one of the highest-grossing films in Korean cinema—alongside costars Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee and Jin Seon-kyu.

In the 2019 action comedy, he portrayed the head of a detective squad investigating narcotics. But to remain undercover in his detective work, his character ran a fried chicken restaurant as a front for their investigations.

Song also had notable supporting roles in projects including Trick, Stove League, Baseball Girl and Hyena.

The actor is survived by his wife and two daughters.
