For her big screen debut, Charli XCX was very much interested in keeping it real.
And as Party 4 U” singer’s Erupcja costars emphasized, while filming they got to see a version of Charli that’s a far cry from her pop star persona.
“I think that people see her as this very cool girl, guarded, with shades,” Jeremy O. Harris told E! News’ Francesca Amiker exclusively at Erupcja’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 4, “with a mask on.”
As he put it, “the quickness with which she wanted to take the mask off and the way that she does lyrically, when you listen to a song like ‘Sympathy Is a Knife’ or ‘Everything Is Romantic,’ and you see the core of her beyond the mask, I think she brought that core out on her face and in her performance in such a rich way from day one.”
And despite her packed schedule, Charli made a lasting impact on Jeremy.
“We only had her for 10 days,” he said, “and it was the first 10 days she ever shot a film, so it’s really magical that like we got this experience with her.”
Indeed, while Charli has previously played fictional versions of herself on TV shows like 2021’s Gossip Girl and Overcompensating, Erupcja marked a major departure.
In the Warsaw, Poland-set drama directed by Pete Ohs. Charli plays Bethany, a childhood friend of Lena Góra’s protagonist Nel. And like Jeremy, Lena was quick to gush over Charli’s work ethic and performance.
“She is such a badass,” the Eastern Gate actress told E! about Charli, who joined her costars at the TIFF screening. “She comes in to work, and we do the work really effortlessly and supportively and together.”
While no release date for Erupcja has been shared, keep reading to see when more movies are hitting the big screen in the coming months…
