When it comes to a well-balanced lifestyle, Allison Holker is shaking off her previous POV.
In fact, when it comes to the So You Think You Can Dance alum’s parenting style, her 17-year-old daughter Weslie accused her of being a bit of a health junkie throughout her childhood.
“My entire growing up—I say this to her all the time now—she was so almond mom,” her eldest said on a June 22 episode of their Between Us podcast. “She was like, ‘You have to eat greens, it’s chicken every night.’”
And for her part, Allison—who also shares kids Maddox, 9, and Zaia, 5, with late husband Stephen “tWitch” Boss—couldn’t deny the accusations.
“I definitely was one with Weslie,” the 37-year-old admitted. “I was very strict. I was cooking all the time and her lunches for school were all the organic versions of everything. There were no processed snacks. Everything was different types of nuts, I had a lot of dried fruit options.”
But while Weslie’s eating habits were strictly regulated as a child, the teen has since noticed that her younger siblings aren’t held under the same expectations.
“I love a good chip, she would not let me eat it,” Weslie quipped, adding that her mom’s parenting approach has shifted drastically in recent years. “Now, she doesn’t care!”
As for what inspired Allison’s change of heart? Well, she realized that she might have been taking it a bit too far—despite her good intentions.
“With Weslie, I was, like, ‘OK, we’re going to do this. I’m going to be a good mom,’” the dancer explained. “At that moment, I thought that being a good mom meant that everything was healthy. I was researching everything that was in our kitchen, and I was really diligent about it. I think in a lot of ways it helped me, though I was a little extreme in it.”
“I don’t know if it was for the right reasons, but I did want us to have a healthy lifestyle,” she continued. “I was like, ‘I’m gonna be the best mom if I do this.’ It was a really good choice for me because it educated me more, but then I feel everything comes with balance.”
After all, whenever Weslie was out of her mother’s sight, she took every opportunity to enjoy as many gas station snacks as she could get her hands on. That’s when Allison realized that balance, rather than restriction, was the best approach to instilling healthy habits in her kids.
“There’s a lot of healthy options in our home, but I also allow them to be children,” Allison noted. “I found a little more joy in it, too. I’m just teaching now what I’m trying to do. With Weslie, I was a little strict and now with Maddox and Zaia, I want to be a little more well-balanced.”
