Who wasn’t overjoyed to see Stevie Wonder at the 2025 Met Gala?
The 25-time Grammy winner is no stranger to red carpet events, but this was the 74-year-old’s first time attending the annual fashion extravaganza benefiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
So, why this year of all years? It wasn’t superstition keeping him away…
“I’m just here,” Stevie told E!’s Zuri Hall, “very happy to celebrate Black designers and their ability to create consistently—since the beginning of time—style.” (See every stunning look at the 2025 Met Gala.)
Indeed, the evening’s theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by centuries of Black dandyism. Wonder represented the “Tailored for You” dress code in a monochromatic ensemble dramatically topped with a glittering black cape by Sergio Hudson, befitting music royalty.
Wonder called the designer who created his outfit “consistently great.”
After this stop in New York, Wonder heads off to London for a series of shows that has the “I Just Called to Say I Love You” artist very excited about the near future.
“I’m so excited to be coming to London to present love, light and song because, truly, we need love in this nation and in the world,” Wonder explained. “We definitely need the light—a lot of truth—and what has always kept us going throughout history is song. So I’m very happy to celebrate that with everyone.”
On behalf of the world, we like the sound of that.
And along with music—a gospel choir performing Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell‘s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on the Met steps to kick off the carpet was a rousing treat—fashion has been known to bring people together as well.
Even when they disagree on what should be in and what should be out.
For this year’s event, Met Gala chair Anna Wintour got chic assists from cochairs Colman Domingo, Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams, while the host committee included Doechii, Sha’Carri Richardson, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Lee, Angel Reese, Janelle Monaé, Usher and Simone Biles and husband Jonathan Owens.
