Pharrell Williams Shares How He Was Secretly Named Met Gala 2025 Co-Host Years Ago

Watch:Met Gala 2025: Why Pharrell Williams Kept His Co-Chair Gig a Secret For 2 Years

Pharrell Williams had to keep his happiness for the 2025 Met Gala a secret.

The 52-year-old is a co-chair for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Benefit this year alongside Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton and Vogue’s Anna Wintour, but the “Happy” singer was tapped for the event years ago.

As Pharrell—who is also the menswear creative director at Louis Vuitton—described it, he was invited to co-host the event by Anna after his Paris Fashion Week show in June 2023.

“We had breakfast at the Ritz, as we always do, and she said to me, ‘I want you to host in 2025,’” Pharrell told E!’s Zuri Hall at the 2025 Met Gala. “But I had to keep it a secret. So, we’ve been sitting on it for two years and planning for it.”

The music producer—who got ready for the event at The Mark Hotel and sported a custom Louis Vuitton suit on the carpet, as well as a set of gold Invisalign teeth aligners—also detailed the honor he felt preparing for this year’s exhibition, which was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. (See all the stars attending the Met Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art here.)

“It’s just given us an opportunity and platform to celebrate this really amazing, powerful color of black,” Pharrell continued. “You like black dresses, black shoes, black clothes, black TVs, black devices, black shades, black planes, black cars. But here’s a moment where we get to celebrate Black people.”

Indeed, the multi-hyphenate—who walked the carpet alongside his wife Helen Lasichanh—had been vocal about his excitement for the night’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme and “Tailored for You” dress code.

“It’s going to be a very impactful, beautiful night where we celebrate the color Black,” Pharrell said on the April 29 episode of the Run-Through with Vogue podcast. “We celebrate the things that come from that color. We celebrate the mentality. We celebrate the plight. We celebrate the progress and the success. And we celebrate the potential.”
