Lewis Hamiltonis stopping traffic at the 2025 Met Gala.
The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, who is also a co-chair of the May 5 event, sped onto the red carpet in a bold look that we’re giving the green light.
Inspired by the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme’s “Tailored for You” dress code, the 40-year-old sported an all-beige ensemble including a tuxedo and bowtie styled by Eric McNeal, topping off the outfit with a matching beret and gold accessories including a brooch on his lapel. Since attending his first Met Gala in 2015, the 40-year-old—who is a co-chair alongside Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Vogue’s Anna Wintour—has established himself as one of the annual event’s standout stars. Plus, the Plus 44 clothing line founder’s budding friendship with Wintour after meeting at the 2024 Wimbledon tennis tournament set him up as the perfect choice to join her in spearheading fashion’s biggest night.
“We just realized that we had so much more in common,” Lewis told GQof his bond with Wintourin February. “She doesn’t want to talk about fashion all day, she’s really into tennis, so we had this great conversation and our friendship blossomed from there. I’ve sat in a hotel room with her for an hour and a half just yapping, it’s been so cool.”
And the racecar driver’s fashion expertise is just as evident; he has been open about the evolution of his style. Though he was inspired by stars like Muhammad Ali and Eddie Murphywhen he was younger, he later was drawn to cultural figures like writer James Baldwin, activist Nelson Mandela and stylist André Leon Talley.
“I saw how their image was so important to them,” Lewis told Vogue in an interview published April 15, “and how they presented themselves through fashion.”
He continued, “At the same time, I was trying to understand how I wanted to present myself. As a teenager I didn’t have any money for clothes; my family and I spent it all on racing. So I would wash cars along my street for pocket money and go to the little thrift store in town and get the Tommy Hilfiger pieces that I saw in music videos. They gave me the confidence to show up and say, ‘This is who I am.’”
And Lewis isn’t just concerned with who he is. Indeed, the Brit had a strong vision for what he hopes to accomplish with this year’s event focused on the history of Black style.
“Naturally, I hope this year’s Met Gala sparks conversation and reconfirms the connection between fashion and self-expression, and how deep it runs in Black culture,” he continued to Vogue. “I hope it allows us to show that we have ownership of our identity and how we see ourselves and how we see one another, and how we use fashion to combat preconceived notions with humanity and dignity.”
He added, “If you think about where we are in the world—and particularly in the States, in terms of people pulling back on diversity—I think this Met Gala sends a really strong message that we must continue to celebrate and elevate Black history.”
