When it comes to the red carpet, Colman Domingo is bringing nothing short of his A-game.
And the 2025 Met Gala was no different. The Sing Sing star arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art May 5 perfectly encapsulating the “Tailored for You” dress code in a dazzling pleated blue caped Valentino look, complete with a sequined breastplate. He finished off the ensemble with a statement necklace, stud earrings and gold jeweled ear cuff from Boucheron jewelry as well as an Omega Speedmaster watch in 18k gold. On the carpet, he ditched the cape to reveal a black and white windowpane blazer, with a polka dotted ascot tie and boutonniere, and gray wool trousers. But beyond turning yet another red carpet into a runway, Colman—who made his debut at the 2024 gala—has a special role at this year’s Met event benefitting the Costume Institute.
Indeed, he’s co-chairing of the event, alongside Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and permanent co-chair Anna Wintour. And it’s a role the actor doesn’t take lightly as he recently shared insight into his look.
“It’s gonna be beautiful,” Colman, 55, teased to E! News at the Fashion Trust U.S. Awards last month. “We just finalized our designs, and I think it’s going to be an epic look. If anything, I can tease that I’m playing with history.”
His show-stopping ensemble certainly lived up to the hype—and with good reason as he explained how over the course of six sketches he and Valentino found a design that pays homage the Costume Institute exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
“Then we did some editorial decisions together,” Colman, styled by Wayman + Micah for the Met Gala, explained. “We took some elements we really loved with one thing and pushed the envelope with other things. Then we arrived at what I think will make me feel my very best and feel very on point. And celebrate really fine tailoring.”
From the Oscars to the Met steps, the Emmy winner is always topping the best dressed lists. As for his secret to a winning look, it’s actually quite simple.
“I always want to feel effortlessly luxurious,” Colman noted. “I want to feel like I’m the party in some way shape or form. I always want to feel like I’m at ease, I never want to feel too fussy.”
