Because of you River Rose and Remy, Kelly Clarkson knows what it means to be a mom.
“I think parenting changes you in the best of ways,” the singer told Us Weekly in February 2020. “It’s made me stronger, but it’s definitely hard. It’s the hardest job out of all the jobs… I think it makes you selfless. It makes you really prioritize.”
But just like in music, Kelly—who celebrates her 43 birthday April 24—knows motherhood has high and low notes.
“Most of us are trying our best,” she said on a March episode of the Not Gonna Lie With Kylie Kelce podcast. “We’re gonna f–k up. We’re gonna mess up, and we don’t mean to. I have this conversation with my kids, too. If I lose my temper on something ’cause I’m just over it ’cause I’ve had to tell you so many times, I look at them [and] I go, ‘Mommy’s human, and that was a human moment. And that was not where I should have gone, but I own it.’ I think it’s important to show that to them. But I just think this whole filtered, perfection thing, that’s not real. Being honest is the best.”
And honestly, Kelly loves making sweet family memories with River, 10, and Remy, 9. Whether they’re hanging out at home in New York, going on vacation or the kids are joining her on her eponymous talk show, the Grammy winner cherishes moments like this.
“River and Remy, I love you so much,” she said on a March episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I’m so proud of you both. They’re just fearless and very bold. They’re more like me as an adult, not what I was like as a child. So, they talk a lot too.”
Kelly shares River and Remy with her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, who is also dad to daughter Savannah and son Seth from a previous marriage. And though it’s been three years since the OG American Idol winner and the manager finalized their divorce, she admits their little ones aren’t quite ready for her to reenter the dating world.
“They constantly bring it up: ‘Please, we don’t want you to be with anybody else,'” Kelly said of Remy and River’s reaction during a November interview with KOST 1035. “They’re young, so it’s hard to picture their mom with someone else other than their dad. That’s kind of a thing, too. But I have expressed, ‘Hey, I love you guys, but mommy needs lovins too.'”
