Dare we say you’ll flip over this transformation.
G Flip has officially kicked off a new era—teasing new music and debuting platinum blonde hair, courtesy of friend Chris Appleton, who also cut the singer’s signature long locks.
“new wheels, new hair,” G Flip wrote on Instagram April 9, “new songies, lez go.”
To usher in a new era and take the 31-year-old’s hair to new heights, Chris—whose clients also include Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez—went in stages.
“It’s a big change,” the celeb hairstylist told E! News in an exclusive interview. “Getting to do something like that for someone that you are really close to is really magical and fun.”
“When you open the door to the possibilities of hair and how it can transform you and how it can change your image,” Chris, a Schwarzkopf Global Color Ambassador, continued, “it’s very powerful, especially when you’re using that in music or in your storytelling.”
So, where did they start the process?
“We cut it to one length,” he explained, “and then we went shorter after that.”
“When you’re changing, it’s natural for anyone to feel a bit apprehensive,” he continued. “Hair doesn’t grow back in five minutes. Everyone knows that. That’s why there has to be an element of trust and comfort between the two of you.”
For the coloring process, Chris turned to Schwarzkopf Professional products, including lightener BLONDME 9+—a go-to for big transformations, like taking G’s natural dark blonde hair platinum. Chris also customized the toner and shadow root, using IGORA Vibrance, to give G a lived-in blonde look.
And for anyone thinking about trying the platinum process at home, the key is maintenance.
“Try and not put so much heat styling on it,” Chris noted, “because all those things can change the color, and it can also obviously affect the condition.”
As he explained, platinum is the biggest thing you can do to hair, which means you’re pushing it to its limit. So simple tricks like turning the heat down on your styling tools or applying deep conditioning treatments can go a long way.
Plus, he added, “Not being so aggressive on the hair makes a big difference.”
During G’s hours-long process, the “Good Enough” artist had wife Chrishell Stause by their side.
“Chrishell was so happy to be part of the process, which is amazing,” Chris told E!, adding that the Selling Sunset star is a “great partner to G and a great friend, because she just brings a lot of joy to the room.”
In fact, Chrishell even got an impromptu haircut from Chris during G’s transformation: “They both left looking good.”
