These four stars are coming together for an epic journey.
Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn and Harris Dickinson have been tapped to bring to life The Beatles in an epic, four-part biopic—each movie centering on one of the four bandmembers and his perspective.
Gladiator II’s Mescal will play Paul McCartney and Saltburn star Keoghan will play Ringo Starr,while Stranger Things actor Quinn will play the Fab Four’s George Harrison, leaving Babygirl star Dickinson to portray frontman John Lennon.
The four films, produced by Sony and directed by Sam Mendes, will all release in April 2028, Mendes confirmed March 31 at CinemaCon.
“Together, all four films will tell the story of the greatest band in history,” Mendes said, per Entertainment Weekly, while Sony’s CEO Tom Rothman called the simultaneous releases “the first bingeable theatrical experience.”
Mendes, in addition to sharing details about the cast and release dates, also spoke to his inspiration for the film.
“The Beatles changed my understanding of music,” he told the audience, per People. “I’ve been trying to make a movie about them for years.”
Mendes added, “I just felt the story of the band was too huge to fit into a single movie, and that turning it into a TV mini-series just somehow didn’t feel right.”
And when Mescal, Keoghan, Quinn and Dickinson took to the stage during the announcement, the four actors greeted the crowd with a reference to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
“It’s wonderful to be here,” Mescal began, with the rest of the four taking part of the refrain, “it’s certainly a thrill, you’re such a lovely audience, we’d like to take you home with us.”
Ahead of the cast announcements, one of the band’s two remaining members, Starr, shared his feelings about the upcoming biopics.
“I’m excited that [Mendes] has taken the madness of making four movies at the same time, the 84-year-old told People in an interview published March 22. “So I’m excited to see what he does with it.”
He jokingly added, “The only thing, I heard the guy who’s playing me was taking drum lessons, and I asked someone to tell him not to take too many.”
