Charli xcx isn’t quite ready to take her romance to the next level in the trailer for Erupcja.
1-2 Special is set to release writer-director Pete Ohs’ movie in theaters April 17 after its premiere last year at TIFF. Lena Góra, Will Madden and Jeremy O. Harris round out the cast.
Erupcja centers on Bethany (Charli xcx), who gets stuck with boyfriend Rob (Madden) in Poland after a romantic getaway. While waiting out a natural disaster, she finds herself falling back to her former life of clubs and a discarded friendship.
“My boyfriend’s gonna propose tomorrow,” Charli xcx says in the trailer. “With him, the earth doesn’t shake.”
Later, Madden learns new information about his girlfriend and admits, “She’s never said anything like this to me.”
Ohs helmed the feature that he co-wrote with Charli xcx and Góra. Ohs, Charli xcx, Harris, Luke Arreguin, Josh Godfrey, Malia Paul, Alexandra Tynion, Olivia Tyson, Will Westwater and Cham Zhao serve as producers.
In her review of Erupcja for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Jourdain Searles wrote, “Despite the dramatic implications of the film’s title, Erupcja has a casual, slice-of-life vibe to it that prevents Bethany and Rob’s woes from teetering into melodrama.”
Searles also noted that Charli xcx gives the film’s “standout performance” and added, “The pop star is a magnetic screen presence, showing a vulnerability that complements the existential themes of her most recent album, Brat.”
Charli xcx can currently be seen in A24’s feature The Moment and also has roles in the forthcoming movies Faces of Death, The Gallerist and I Want Your Sex.
