Chris Martin was feeling sparks for Dakota Johnson until the very end.
Days before the pair’s reported split, the Coldplay frontman publicly supported Dakota’s upcoming movie with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans during his band’s concert.
“Thank you so much everybody,” Chris said while closing Coldplay’s June 1 show in Stanford, California. “Be kind to yourself, be kind to each other. Don’t forget to see Materialists!”
But while Chris—who shares kids Apple Martin, 21, and Moses Martin, 19, with ex Gwyneth Paltrow—was still standing by Dakota at the time, multiple sources confirmed to People June 4 that the duo called it quits after nearly eight years together.
And while neither have spoken out about the breakup, Dakota stepped out in New York June 4, sporting oversized pants and shirt, along with a wide-brimmed sun hat and shades—but no engagement ring.
Even before Chris’ sweet shoutout, though, Dakota had also stepped out for dinner in New York with Taylor Swift May 29, and while she donned two large rings and a bold necklace, she also opted to leave her left ring finger bare.
Dakota and Chris’ breakup comes almost a year after rumors of a split circulated. Indeed, many outlets reported in August that they had called off their engagement, but a rep told E! News that it was “not true,” adding, “they are happily together.”
Prior to that speculation, the stars were also privy to breakup rumors just a year after they confirmed their romance in early 2018. By August 2019, though, they were doing just fine, with a source telling E! “They’re planning to spend more time together later this summer.”
Chris and Dakota were so solid that the insider posited they were getting “very serious” with an engagement “in the cards.”
In fact, reports emerged in 2024 that Chris and Dakota had been engaged “for years.”
While the two were extremely private throughout their romance, they did share a couple of sweet public moments. Keep reading to relive their love story…
