Critics Choice Awards: Sarah Michelle Gellar Teases OG Cast Members’ Involvement in Buffy Reboot

Watch:Critics Choice Awards: Sarah Michelle Gellar Teases ‘Buffy’ Revival, Will Her Costars Return?

Sarah Michelle Gellar is stepping back into the Buffyverse—but she may not be alone.

As the Buffy the Vampire star walked the red carpet of the 2025 Critics Choice Awards—hosted by Chelsea Handler at Santa Monica’s Barkar Hangar—on Feb. 7, she teased her return to Sunnydale for a Hulu revival of the hit series. And it turns out, she may be joined by some of her OG cast members.

“They are all aware,” she exclusively told E! News correspondent Will Marfuggi. “I speak to them all anyway.”

“Ultimately it’s something we want to do,” she continued, adding that the reboot of the iconic show is still in its early stages, “but it’s also about setting the world.”

After all, it has been more than 20 years since the original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, concluded its run after seven seasons. So, of course, the Cruel Intentions actress can only hope to “do it justice.”

“Goodness knows there’s big shoes to fill—my own,” she joked, “which is kind of weird. I should fit in them.”

As for what fans do know about the sequel series? The first episode of the yet-to-be-named show is set to be directed by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao. And, according to 20th Television and Searchlight TV, they will be heralding in “the next chapter in the Buffyverse.”

And to show just how excited she is to continue her character’s story, the 47-year-old confirmed the news herself in a heartfelt social media message.

“I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her world,” Sarah wrote in a Feb. 6 Instagram post, “but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

“Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this,” she added. “This will be for you.”

As we look forward to the long-awaited return of the slayer herself, keep reading to see who else attended the 2025 Critics Choice Awards.
