Cynthia Erivo to Star in Animated Musical ‘Bad Fairies’ for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, Locksmith Animation

Cynthia Erivo has been tapped to be the lead voice for Bad Fairies, an animated feature from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation.

In making the announcement Thursday, Warners also set a May 21, 2027 release date for the project.

Fairies is being directed by Megan Nicole Dong, an animation writer and story artist who created the Netflix series Centaurworld. It is co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, who worked on movies such as Puss in Boots and Wish Dragon. Fairies has an original screenplay by Deborah Frances-White.

Tony Award–winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss (Six: The Musical) are writing original songs for the feature, with multiple Grammy-nominated Isabella “Machine” Summers, of Florence + The Machine, composing the score and contributing to the songs.

The musical comedy follows a “delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they shake up their magical world,” per Warners’ announcement Thursday. Erivo will voice Jayne Staplegun, a trailblazing fairy whose defiant streak sparks a rebellion.

The film’s creative team also includes producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James C.J. Williams, character designer Uwe Heidschötter, and heads of story Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt.

Production is currently underway in London, with DNEG Animation serving as digital partner. Bad Fairies will be the first feature released under the first-look deal between Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith.

Erivo, a three-time Academy Award–nominated and Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award–winning actress, next hits the big-screen reprising her role of Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, which will be released Nov. 21.
