They had style, they had flair, they were there. They, of course, are the Fines and Sheffields.
As for there? That’s Dying Is No Excuse!. Because more than 25 years after The Nanny aired its final episode, Fran Drescher (a.k.a. Nanny Fran Fine) cheered on her former onscreen mom Renée Taylor (Sylvia Fine, of course) and her TV stepdaughter Nicholle Tom (that would be Maggie Sheffield) as she watched their play Aug. 9 in Massachusetts with ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson.
“A magical night of theater happened,” Fran, 67, wrote on Instagram alongside photos of herself with Renée and the rest of cast. “This triumph celebrates the creative and complex love filled marriage & relationship between Renee Taylor & Joe Bologna.”
Yes, Sylvia—er, Renée—wrote that play and not Mr. Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy).
“Renee at 92 is a magical genius who opens and closes the show,” Fran continued of the legendary actress, whose husband died from cancer in 2018. “The flashback scenes beginning when Renee was 30 and goes through all of their life together thru The Nanny and Joe’s battle with cancer.”
As for how Nicholle, 47, fits into all this? Well, she plays a lead role in bringing Renée’s story to life.
“The top notch cast is led by The Nanny costar Nicholle Tom who is both fearless & incredible as Renee and Jack Maxwell of Booze Traveler in a tour de force performance as Joe,” Fran raved. “The supporting cast are major character actor pros who play multiple characters and breathe life into the many faces throughout their lives.”
“If you’re anywhere near Stockbridge MA., GO,” she concluded. “Next stop hopefully Broadway!”
And yes, the kids (or, now adults) are smiling—such joie de vivre!
“Thank you so much for coming,” Nicholle wrote in the comments. “It was amazing to see you and Peter! Your support means the world to me.”
