Francis Ford Coppola is doing well after a brief trip to an Italian hospital.
Hours after local news outlets in Rome reported that the five-time Oscar winner, 86, was taken to the hospital Aug. 5, the director cleared up speculation that he was rushed there unexpectedly.
“Da Dada (what my kids call me) is fine,” Coppola wrote to Instagram alongside a picture of himself grinning. “Taking an opportunity while in Rome to do the update of my 30 year old afib procedure with its inventor, a great Italian doctor – Dr. Andrea Natale!”
The Godfather cowriter concluded, “I am well!”
Ahead of his trip to Italy, Coppola—who is dad to kids Roman Coppola, 60, Sofia Coppola, 54, and the late Gian-Carlo Coppola with his late wife Elanor Coppola—had been on a tour across the United States to screen his 2024 film Megalopolis, which he has been recounting on his social media.
“Warm thanks to the attendees of the @capitoltheatre in New York,” he captioned a July 26 Instagram post alongside a snap from the Q&A portion of the event. “I so enjoyed the questions and subsequent discussion of ways to build a more beautiful future for our children.”
And though Megalopolis underperformed at the box office and was panned by critics upon its release, Coppola has yet to send the movie to a streaming service because “the film is still being shown in theaters.”
“I don’t want anyone to own it,” he told GQ in May. “After the election, people are selling out screenings of Megalopolis—the way it was intended to be seen. Being that it was so prophetic or prescient to say America is like Rome—it’s going to maybe lose its republic—now people are rushing to see it in theaters.”
Referencing a past movie that is now considered a cult classic, Coppola added, “It’s just like what happened with Apocalypse Now. [That] was a big flop, it got terrible reviews, everyone said it was the worst movie ever made. And yet people never stopped going to see it. The same thing is now happening with Megalopolis.”
