You won’t want to object toApple Martin rare insight into her college life.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s 20-year-old daughter revealed what she is studying at Vanderbilt University—and it’s proof she’s not necessarily following in her parents’ footsteps.
“I’m a law, history, and society major, but I wish I would’ve taken—maybe I’ll take a theater course before I leave,” Apple revealed to Interview magazine in a conversation published April 2. “It’s a fun balance between my very different extracurriculars and my major.”
Apple—who is in her junior year at the Nashville college—admitted that theatrics and Legally Blonde played a part in her matriculation choices.
“So, the reason why I was originally like, ‘Maybe I’ll be a lawyer,’ was because I loved acting, but I was insecure and nervous, so I was like, ‘Oh my god, if I’m a lawyer, I can perform on the stage in a trial setting,’” she explained. “It’s insane that I thought that. Also, I cannot lie, I was like, ‘I’ll just be Elle Woods.’ It’s a lot harder than it looks. I don’t know how she managed to go to law school every day as fabulous as she did.”
“But I love history. I love true crime. I love investigating,” she added. “I also think it’s fun to look at the history of law and see how you can implement it in a modern context. If I were to be a lawyer, I would just want to help people. That’s probably the biggest thing.”
Still, Apple—who made her debut at the Le Bal des Débutantes in November—found the time to take baby steps into both of her parents’ worlds of acting and music as she joined the Vanderbilt Original Cast cabaret theater group.
“I would love to do theater because I adore it so much,” she said. “I’ve obviously never done film before, but I’ve been trying to get involved in student films. I was born a theater kid.”
And she can carry a tune—her dad is the Coldplay frontman, after all—adding about her singing chops, “I have a very low voice so whenever we’re doing harmonies it’ll be like, ‘Alright, it’s the boys and Apple.’ I’m singing my absolute favorite song ever this semester, which I’m so excited about. I’m definitely not the best in the org, but I love it.”
And while Apple is cruising with the vibes of college life, her parents (who also dropped her brother Moses, 18, off at Brown University this year) are hyper aware of how different their children’s time at school will be.
“Oh, this is a thing. I feel the energy,” Gwyneth recalled to Variety last month about Apple’s college move-in day. “I feel the stares.”
“Look, they’re the children of two super-famous people, and so they understand what comes with that. They’ve grown up in it,” the Oscar winner added. “You would be surprised at how lovely and unassuming and down-to-earth they are.”
