The first teaser trailer for the third season of House of the Dragon has arrived.
The footage shows members of the divided House Targaryen going into battle, with plenty of fiery dragon action.
The season’s marketing tagline is the rather foreboding “From Fire Comes Darkness.”
The season includes a massive battle sequence that was originally planned for the show’s second season but ended up getting moved to season three after the season two episode count was reduced to eight episodes.
The trailer comes as HBO‘s latest Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, prepares to unveil its debut season finale. The modestly budgeted Knight has generated plenty of praise from fans and critics, sparking some inevitable debate and comparisons with HOTD over which show is superior. The winner would seem to be fans of the franchise as — for the first time ever — there will be two GoT projects airing in the same year.
The news follows Wednesday’s announcement that another GoT prequel project, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, will be a stage play at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The play will tell the story of the fateful Tourney at Harrenhal that led to Robert’s Rebellion and the downfall of House Targaryen.
The trailer follows The Hollywood Reporter‘s exclusive cover story profile of saga creator George R.R. Martin where the executive producer discussed his creative differences with HOTD showrunner Ryan Condal. The duo particularly split over the showrunner’s plan for season three which deviates from Martin’s source material in ways that Condal has suggested were pragmatic and necessary.
Fans can judge for themselves when the new season of House of the Dragon gets underway in June on HBO.
