Hailee Steinfeld’s approach to haircare is all about simplicity—achieving healthy, voluminous hair with minimal effort. Her at-home routine reflects the lessons she’s learned from professionals, focusing on the right products and tools to create a solid foundation and give her that bouncy, lightweight feeling she loves.
In this E! exclusive interview, the Pitch Perfect alum shares how great hair isn’t just about the products—it’s about finding confidence in a good hair day. When her hair feels right, she’s ready to take on anything.
She also reveals her biggest hairstyling regret and why it’s important to have fun with your hair—because hair is a form of self-expression, and sometimes, it’s all about experimenting and embracing new looks.
E!: How does having a good hair day influence your confidence?
HS: There’s nothing better than a good hair day. When you see that your hair looks good, there’s just something about it. You can have a great outfit on, throw on a good pair of sunglasses, and if your hair is doing what it needs to be doing, there’s this feeling of confidence—like you can take on the world.
I also think we’ve all felt the opposite of that, right? When we wake up with weird, air-dried hair, and it’s all funky, flat, crinkly, or whatever. At least, I’ve had many mornings like that. So when it’s not like that, there’s just something so empowering about a good hair moment.
E!: How have the Nexxus Hy-Volume products changed your routine?
HS: They have totally changed my hair routine for the better and made it so easy for me to achieve a look I truly thought I could only get by working with professionals.
There have been countless products that have made my hair feel weighed down or crunchy. There’s something about these—your hair just feels good. When you feel good, you look good, and when you look good, you feel good.
Nexxus Hy-Volume Shampoo
“The shampoo and conditioner give me the perfect base and foundation, setting me up for success right there. Depending on what level of product build-up I’m at, I shampoo twice. I love a really good shampoo.”
Heeta Shampoo Scalp Brush Massager
“I love using those little scalp massagers too when I’m shampooing.”
Nexxus Hy-Volume Conditioner
“It makes my hair feel so bouncy, light, and airy.”
Hair Hacks from Hailee: “I’ll let my conditioner sit for whatever length of time while I’m quickly doing anything else that I’ve got to do in the shower, and then that’s that. I don’t time anything. I don’t get too hung up on any of it. I feel like whatever length of time this is in your hair, you can just feel that it’s doing great things for you.”
Nexxus Hy-Volume Protein Fusion Cloud Foam Mousse
“I throw in some Cloud Foam, reach for the round brush and blow dryer, go to town, and it just works. There’s a lift at the root that I thought I could only get if I sprayed my hair after the fact.”
Hair Hacks from Hailee: “I use it with damp hair after the shower, and then style it from there. Go from the roots to the ends.”
E!: Have you ever experimented with any hair trends or products that ended up being a bit of a regret in hindsight?
HS: I will say that I really tried for a very, very, very long time to make bangs work for myself. Bangs are hard. It didn’t work. It was those straight-across bangs that I wish so badly that could be for me.
E!: You get your hair done a lot. What do you do in between to maintain its health?
HS: I mean, I do love a good Nexxus hair serum. Also, as far as reviving my hair, I always go for dry shampoo because that always revives me on the go.
Nexxus Ultralight Smooth Frizz Defy Cream Serum for Frizzy and Dry Hair
“I do love a good hydrating serum, and that feels like it always does wonders. When I wake up after using a serum it’s like I went back in time before using hair tools on it.”
Nexxus Advanced Invisible Clean Dry Shampoo
Revive your hair with this invisible dry shampoo that absorbs oil, boosts volume, and keeps your style fresh without any chalky residue.
E!: Are there any hair hacks or beauty tips that you always stick with?
HS: A couple of things come to mind. I never leave the house without SPF. I never go to bed without a clean face—no makeup, nothing.
When it comes to my hair, I’ve become really aware of product buildup. So I make sure when I’m washing my hair that I’m really getting in there and cleansing properly to ensure there isn’t a lot of buildup because that can lead to a whole other set of issues.
E!: Would you say it’s more about paying attention to your hair’s needs instead of following a schedule or set of rules?
HS: I’ve been saying that for a while now—just meeting myself where I’m at, understanding what my body needs in that moment, and doing whatever it is I know I need to get done.
E!: How does taking care of your hair fit in with your overall approach to self-care?
HS: I really do believe it all goes hand in hand, and it all comes back to feeling good from within, and knowing that when you feel good, you look great.
I get my hair done a lot, especially when I’m on set. I’m in makeup and hair every day, there’s heat on it, product in it—things that are stripping my hair of all the good stuff. So, being conscious of what I’m using and just taking care of it is important.
For me, not doing a whole lot when I don’t have to has been a game changer—letting my hair and skin rest when I can.
E!: So many talented professionals have styled your hair. What have you picked up along the way for those days when you get ready on your own?
HS: I do feel so grateful to have been able to take tips and tricks from all these people over the years and just be inspired by them, and then to be handed the most amazing products too is obviously a huge help.
My biggest tip has everything to do with mindset, not necessarily the actual physical process of doing hair. It’s more about feeling encouraged to experiment and try something new. If it means cutting it, it’ll grow back. If it means styling it in a new way, you’ll just get better at it.
Any confidence I can get from people I’ve worked with or spoken to in the hair world is so valuable. I really appreciate that extra bit of encouragement and the reminder to have fun with it!
