Get ready to see a Sturgeon Moon swimming in the sky.
After all, this month’s full moon is set to make its annual appearance, with this year’s phenomenon also making a splash in astrology.
The Sturgeon Moon—which will peak at 3:55 a.m. ET on Aug. 9—will be visible all weekend long as it makes its way across the sky. The best time to see the full moon will be just after sunset on its first day, as it will be painted with orange and amber before passing the horizon.
As for its unique name? According to the Farmer’s Almanac, it’s an homage to the “giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain.”
After the waters warm up in the Northeast, the freshwater fish—an essential part of the Native Americans’ diets who lived in the region during the late summer—return to the Great Lakes region at the tail end of the summer.
The moon isn’t just a natural occurrence this year, with it also being in the sign of Aquarius. The phenomenon feels the weight of its weight and its opposite sign, Leo.
“This Air sign’s energy will be infused into our lives,” astrologer Kyle Thomas explained in his August 2025 horoscope. “This means that both zodiac signs hold ties to our passions, sense of expression, aspirations and how we connect to others—whether that is in love or friendship.”
Although the Sturgeon Moon will be best seen on Aug. 9, Kyle noted that, in regards to the Aquarius moon, “We’ll be able to feel it already creeping in by August 7, 2025, and notice it linger until August 13, 2025.”
With Aquarius being known for independence, creativity and innovation, the moon will give astrology lovers a chance to look within.
Kyle noted that Uranus, Saturn and Neptune being 120 degrees apart during this time “will bring innovation, imagination, spiritual and psychic breakthroughs, as well as opportunities for long-term creativity, success, and structures to be put into place.”
Mars, being 120 degrees from Uranus, “invigorated us with a fiery passion for new horizons, stepping outside of the box, and embracing a vibrant sense of ‘new’ personally and professionally.”
He added, “This can push us to meet with new kinds of people, experience magnetic attraction, or have fun in unique and different ways.”
