Jason Momoa has nabbed the leading role in Helldivers, Justin Lin’s video game adaptation for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions and based on the popular video game franchise from Arrowhead Game Studios.
Sony Pictures has also set a Nov. 10, 2027 theatrical release for the feature adaptation.
The project is based on a video game that launched in 2015 and the sequel, Helldivers 2, sold over 12 million units and centers on an elite unit of soldiers—known as Helldivers— who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.
Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash and Lin are producing the video game movie. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions previously worked together on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, which earned $407 million globally and is one of the top ten highest grossing video game adaptation globally.
PlayStation Productions is also a producer on Peacock’s hit series Twisted Metal and HBO’s award winning The Last of Us.
Momoa is also starring in Warner Bros./Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie, alongside Jack Black and Danielle Brooks, and recently starred in Amazon MGM Studios’ The Wrecking Crew, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, alongside Dave Bautista and Morena Baccarin. His upcoming movie credits include DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, wherein he plays the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo; starring opposite Ryan Reynolds in Legendary/Warner Bros.’ Animal Friends, a live-action/animated adventure; and playing Blanka in Legendary’s Street Fighter. On top of that, he is reprising his role as DuncanIdaho in Dune: Part Three.
Momoa is repped by WME.
