Jennifer Lopez will dance again after her divorce from Ben Affleck.
The Wedding Planner actress officially debuted her new breakup song “Wreckage of You,” seemingly inspired by her split from the Batman actor, from whom she finalized her divorce in January after two years of marriage.
“This is a song that is a new song that I want to sing for the first time tonight that came to me when I was up all night one night,” Jennifer told the crowd during the first night of her Up All Night Tour in Pontevedra, Spain, July 8, per footage shared to social media. “Shall we sing this one for the people?”
The 55-year-old—who first sang the song at a private fan event July 2—then went on to sing about knowing that she’s “better” now, but could only see so “from a distance.”
“The love I want, the love I need, it starts in me,” she sang, “now I found my way here I’m gonna stay there. Thank you for the scars you left on my heart, was showing me that stars shine brighter in the dark. I won’t fall apart because of who we are, but your broken parts.”
During the song’s chorus, Jennifer shared her gratitude for their relationship, the good times they had together and how much stronger it made her.
“Because of you, I am stronger, wiser,” she sang. “Better than I’ve ever been. I won’t let you no longer, longer, ever say goodbye to me. It was perfect the while that you made me believe, really got only greater for me, and it made me stronger, stronger, bulletproof. Now watch me climb out of the wreckage of you.”
Later in the song, the Marry Me star said she “had to break to know how it feels,” and declared, “For however long it takes for my soul to heal, I will make you deal,” before thanking the unnamed ex for “the pain that you caused.”
Jennifer’s revealing new song reflects the sentiments that she told her 17-year-old twins Max and Emme—whom she shares with Marc Anthony—about her split from Ben.
“I said, ‘I promise you, this is a difficult time, but you’re going to see that I’ll come out the other side stronger and better.’ I promised them that and I did it,” she said in an interview with El Pais published in May. “And they feel it now. That gives me a great sense of peace in my life.”
And being able to guide her kids through such a challenging time for their family is something that the “Let’s Get Loud” singer is proud of.
“I’m happier that I’m a step further along than I was a year ago, two years ago, three years ago,” Jennifer explained. “I’m proud of myself for that and I’m proud that I was able to navigate my children through difficult times, that they’re stronger and better because of it.”
