John Mulaney is swinging into another year alongside wife Olivia Munn.
Indeed, the couple—who tied the knot last July—celebrated the Saturday Night Live alum’s 43rd birthday by attending day three of the US Open on Aug. 26.
For their recent outing at New York City’s Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, John and Olivia—who share kids Malcolm, 3, and Méi, 11 months—were hand-in-hand while donning matching white outfits.
Once they took their seats, the duo was immediate immersed in tennis star Coco Gauff’s tense match against competitor Ajla Tomljanovic—and fans couldn’t get enough of John’s animated reactions.
Indeed, videos shared to social media proved that the comedian simply couldn’t contain his concern as Coco fought for her victory in a three-set battle, which lasted nearly three hours.
And when the couple’s faces were shown on the jumbotron amid all the chaos, the crowd went absolutely wild.
After all, the two have faced their fair share of trials and tribulations, including John navigating his sobriety while helping his wife through her breast cancer journey.
“I remember one day she’s in bed,” he recalled of Olivia during a May episode of Ted Danson’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. “She had the 10-hour double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, and she still has more to go.”
“I brought her a tray with apple juice, something she wanted to eat that her mom had made in the kitchen,” he continued, “and then it had Oxycodone and some sort of nerve medication and a Xanax, which they also gave just for rest and recovery.”
And because he was busy focusing on Olivia’s recovery at the time, John—who has been open about his addiction to alcohol and cocaine—realized that he didn’t even give holding the pills a second thought.
“I’m walking, I go, ‘Oh it never crossed my mind that I was holding these medications in my hand,’” he continued. “The obsession of it was gone. I thought, ‘Oh, I’m so far beyond that and I can be a good butler with the best client.’”
But when Olivia initially received her diagnosis in April 2023, the Everybody’s Live host—who began his sobriety journey after a relapse three years prior—wasn’t so confident in his ability to commit to a sober lifestyle.
“I will admit it’s a huge change,” he said. “Just a huge way of looking at everything. And I’m shocked I did it. I’m shocked I was able to do it. Become sober. To actually stick to it in every way. To not have, ‘Well I still do this.’ Nothing wrong or shameful about relapse, I’m shocked always that it landed.”
