Kate Winslet just debuted a hair transformation of titanic proportions.
The Oscar-winning actress is set to make her directorial debut for Goodbye June, a Netflix film that she also stars in. And, in new first-look photos released by the streamer Aug. 27, Kate debuts her major hair change in years.
Instead of her usual golden-brown locks that she tends to wear in thick, natural waves or glamorous updos, the 49-year-old seemingly sports a lighter shade of blonde for her latest film. The style is also new for Kate, who dons super straight hair pulled back behind her ears and wispy curtain bangs with a thinner look.
The Mare of Easttown star hasn’t made many other drastic changes to her hair throughout her decades-long career, though she notably had dark, copper red hair for her iconic performance as Rose DeWitt Bukater in 1997’s Titanic and donned a series of bright green, red, orange and blue hair colors in 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Goodbye June, which will be released in select theaters Dec. 12 and available to stream on Netflix Dec 24, takes place in the run-up to Christmas when, according to Netflix, “an unexpected turn in their mother’s heal thrusts four adult siblings and their exasperating father into chaos.” Kate’s star-studded list of costars includes Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough and Helen Mirren.
Kate’s first time in the director’s chair will surely thrust her back in the spotlight, but the British actress—who shares Mia, 24, with Jim Threapleton, Joe, 21, with Sam Mendes and Bear, 11, with husband Edward Abel Smith—tends to keep a low profile between projects. Her penchant for privacy reflects how she raised her children.
In fact, Mia recently reflected on what it was like growing up outside of the public eye while also having a famous mother.
“I really could count on one hand—both hands possibly—the amount of times that I went to set as a kid,” the Phoenician Scheme star told Elle in May. “My mother really strived to keep that world separate from our home life. That’s something that she really wanted.”
And, actually, Mia’s adolescence couldn’t have looked more different than the glamour of Hollywood.
“Growing up, there was a lot of running through fields,” Mia explained. “If I look back now, it’s quite like a novel. There was a lot of getting dirty knees and making tents out of tarps.”
Even now, the I Am Ruth actress doesn’t even have social media, which keeps her removed from any potential public scrutiny she might’ve otherwised faced.
“People say, ‘Oh, well done,’ to not having it, but I’ve never had it, so I don’t really know what the ‘Well done’ is for,’” Mia noted. “I don’t want it. I don’t want to worry about dropping my phone out of a tree if I’m climbing one because I’m trying to take a photo of something.”
