Guys, you know you’d better watch out—because Lauryn Hill is making her Met Gala debut.
The “Doo Wop (That Thing)” singer attended the prestigious fashion event for the first time ever on May 5, stepping out onto the iconic steps at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in a pale yellow suit by Cheney Chan featuring a standing collar that draped down to a train. As a guest of 2025 Met Gala co-chair Pharrell Williams, Lauryn completed her look with jewelry by designer Emefa Cole, who used single mine origin gold on the pieces celebrating Ghanaian royalty.
According to makeup artist Alana Palau, the Fugees member also used MAC Cosmetics products to pay “homage to diasporic indigenous women while remaining true to her iconic editorial personal style of Blackened currant lips, sculpted skin, brushed brows with a playful pop of texture and color on the eyes.”
Lauryn’s entire look was a nod to this year’s Met Gala theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which centered around 18th century fashion investigated in Monica L. Miller‘s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
“It’s just given us an opportunity and platform to celebrate that really amazing, powerful color of Black,” Pharrell exclusively told E! News’ Zuri Hall at party. “Here’s a moment where we get to celebrate the people—Black people—and with dandyism.”
As for Lauryn, the 2025 Met Gala marked her first red carpet appearance in almost one year. After all, the 49-year-old is notoriously private and prefers to live her life outside of the spotlight.
“There were definitely things I enjoyed about stardom, but there were definitely things I didn’t enjoy,” she told Rolling Stone in 2021. “I think most people appreciate being recognized and appreciated for their work and sacrifice. That, to me, is a given, but living a real life is essential for anyone trying to stay connected to reality and continue making things that truly affect people. This becomes increasingly harder to do in the ‘space’ people try to place ‘star’ in.”
Lauryn added, “The pedestal, to me, is as much about containment and control as it is adulation. Finding balance, clarity and sobriety can be very hard for some to maintain.”
