Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard will always put family first.
In fact, the couple and their two daughters Ramona, 18, and Gloria, 12 recently proved that to be true. The group supported Maggie’s younger brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, during the opening night of his and Denzel Washington’s Broadway revival of William Shakespeare’s Othello on March 23.
The Gyllenhaal-Sarsgaard family were all-smiles backstage at the Barrymore Theatre in New York City. Jake, who plays Iago in the military-set play, fittingly wore army attire while his sister Maggie, 47, stepped out in a glittery, olive green outfit.
Peter, 54, and his two daughters opted for darker tones, with him sporting a suit and the teens cozied up in black coats.
The night-out wasn’t complete without Jake’s girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu, who also joined in on the family love. (They weren’t the only stars in attendance, as the siblings’ godmother Jamie Lee Curtis also stepped out for a night of Shakespearean drama.)
This new outing was a rare high-profile moment for Maggie and Peter, who’ve largely kept their children out of the spotlight over the years. However, the duo—who’ve been married since 2009—have occasionally accompanied their kids on glam outings, such as when Maggie and Ramona attended the Christian Dior Womenswear Spring/Summer show during Paris Fashion Week in 2022.
But given the bond Jake, 44, and his nieces share, it’s no surprise that the whole family cheered him on during his big night.
“They are the best people I know,” Jake complimented Ramona and Gloria (who inspired him to write his 2023 children’s book The Secret Society of Aunts and Uncles)on The Kelly Clarkson show last fall. “My sister and brother-in-law have raised such incredible girls. They are magical. I don’t know where they came from but they’re the best and I love them so much.”
And while Jake has gushed over his nieces, Peter has spoken highly of his wife—including revealing the secret rule that’s kept their nearly 16 years of marriage afloat.
“Tell the truth,” the Looming Towerstar told E! News in December 2023. “It’s pretty simple. Isn’t that the secret to any friendship or relationship? Even if it’s a nice lie to prop someone up or help them avoid what they’re trying to avoid, you’re not living in reality. And that’s the only place to live in.”
