Prime Video‘s God of War adaptation has found its All-Father.
Mandy Patinkin has been cast to play Odin in the streamer’s take on PlayStation’s hugely popular ancient mythology-themed video game.
The Princess Bride and Homeland actor’s character is described as “not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving. He is the most powerful Aesir god, a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge. When it comes to seeking out prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous — he will do anything to try and prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days.”
Earlier today, Prime Video also announced that Icelandic-American actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Deep) has been cast as Thor in the series.
God of War has already received a two-season order and is from acclaimed genre showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander). Preproduction is underway in Vancouver.
Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, Fallout) has signed on to direct the first two episodes.
Previously announced cast members include Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Max Parker as Heimdall. Other cast members have yet to be announced.
With the massive success of Fallout, which is currently airing its second season, Amazon is hopeful that God of War will represent another hit based on a legacy video game title.
The show’s official description: “God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of his wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
