Diana Ross’ Met Gala look was proof of her endless love.
When the music legend arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5—her first time back at the Gala in 22 years—it was a show-stopping moment, literally. The red carpet had to be all but cleared to accommodate Diana’s 18-foot-long train.
And within that train was a sweet homage to the 81-year-old’s family—including kids and fellow 2025 Met Gala attendees Tracee Ellis Ross and Evan Ross.
“It has the names of all my children and my eight grandchildren,” Diana told La La Anthony on the carpet. “So everybody’s name is embroidered, embroidered in that. And the hat—you know, like, I have to be careful with the hat because my head was pretty big.”
In addition to her train, the Supremes singer—who is also mom to kids Rhonda Ross Kendrick, Ross Naess, and Chudney Ross—wore a bejeweled silver gown as well as a large-brim, feathered hat by Ugo Mozie.
But while Diana’s appearance marked an epic return to the Met Gala, she admitted she almost didn’t accept her invite. I was only at the urging of Evan that she said yes.
It was therefore only natural that the 36-year-old—who is married to Ashlee Simpson—acted as his mom’s date for the evening, gushing of her on the red carpet, “She’s the best thing of all time. She’s the best thing. She is the Met Ball. She—you are the Met Ball, you are the moment.”
Diana wasn’t the only celebrity to rock an all-white look as part of their interpretation of the Met Gala’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Stars such as Zendaya and Anna Sawai also wore monochrome white looks.
According to director and principal researcher of The Fashion and Race Database Kimberly Jenkins, the color boasts a long history.
“The color white is that when you were looking super fine and even in hip-hop tradition, super fresh, keeping everything white and clean was critical,” Kimberly told Today.com. “Even with the 1940s tennis star Althea Gibson, she went to great lengths to keep her tennis whites white. The ability to keep your whites white takes a great deal of labor, mindfulness, and stealth when carrying yourself.”
