There’s no red carpet wide enough to keep the stars who showed up early to the 2025 Met Gala from enjoying this joyful serenade.
On a night celebrating the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” an a cappella gospel choir performance of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell‘s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art fit the bill to a tee.
Attendees walking the dreamy midnight-blue, daffodil-decorated carpet paused to whip out their phones and capture the tuxedoed performers breaking out into song and dance. (See every star on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet.)
The “Tailored for You” dress code invited a variety of menswear-inspired looks on all comers, i.e. not just the likes of reliably dapper cochairs Colman Domingo and F1 star Lewis Hamilton.
“We just realized that we had so much more in common,” Hamilton, who sported a cream-colored suit and matching beret by Wales Bonner and Briony, told GQ of being selected for the honor by event chair and Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. “She doesn’t want to talk about fashion all day, she’s really into tennis, so we had this great conversation and our friendship blossomed from there. I’ve sat in a hotel room with her for an hour and a half just yapping, it’s been so cool.”
Always one to take his fashion as seriously as his horsepower, the Ferrari driver added, “As a teenager I didn’t have any money for clothes; my family and I spent it all on racing. So I would wash cars along my street for pocket money and go to the little thrift store in town and get the Tommy Hilfiger pieces that I saw in music videos. They gave me the confidence to show up and say, ‘This is who I am.'”
While normally the entertainment doesn’t begin until the stars have assembled inside the museum, the party got started early in keeping with the landmark Costume Institute exhibit celebrating 300 years of Black dandy style informing the theme of this year’s benefit gala.
Domingo, a best-dressed candidate on any red carpet, showed up in a stunning blue cape, under which he was dressed to impress in black and white Valentino: a windowpane check suit jacket, cream vest, gray trousers and a tie and matching oversize boutonniere in playful polkadots.
“It’s gonna be beautiful,” he promised E! News at the Fashion Trust U.S. Awards in April, teasing his Met Gala look. “We just finalized our designs, and I think it’s going to be an epic look. If anything, I can tease that I’m playing with history.”
