Naz Reid is mourning the loss of his sister Toraya Reid.
The NBA star’s 28-year-old sister was found dead with gunshot wounds near the exit of an apartment building on Sept. 6 in Jackson Township, New Jersey, according to a press release from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Jackson Township police officers responded to the scene after receiving calls of shots fired and an unresponsive female in the roadway, per the release. Upon arrival, authorities saw a 29-year-old man, later identified to be Shaquille Green, running down a nearby street. He was then taken into custody.
“A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit,” the press release stated, “identified Green—who has been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid—as the individual responsible for her death.”
Shaquille has been transported to an Ocean County jail, where he awaits a detention hearing, and faces charges including murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with Toraya’s death.
E! News has reached out to Shaquille’s lawyer for comment but has not heard back.
Following the incident, the Minnesota Timberwolves player paid tribute to his older sister by sharing a series of throwback photos on his Instagram Stories.
Back in 2023, the 26-year-old gushed about how much she cared for him and their younger sister Jakahya Smith.
“My older sister is super protective, she treats us like she’s our parent,” Naz told the Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine that December. “Because I was the only boy, everybody was always paying attention to me because I was playing basketball in another city. So everybody made sure that I was okay.”
Meanwhile, Jakahya expressed her heartbreak and anger on social media, referring to the alleged killer as a “coward” and praying that his loved ones never have to “experience this type of pain.”
“We always send our condolences and say we could never imagine ourselves in that situation…..and yet here I am,” she wrote on Facebook Sept. 6. “The whole way home I was just hoping and praying it was some kind of sick joke that you would call me and tell me it wasn’t true. I’m disgusted. I’m hurt. But most of all I’m angry. I will never be okay.”
And in a second post, she made sure her sister would be remembered in her own right.
“Imma say this one time and one time f–king only. My sister has a name,” Jakahya wrote. “She is not just some girl, She’s not just the nba super star sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her s–t or don’t mention her at all.”
