Nicolas Cage’s Lawyer Slams His Ex’s “Absurd” Assault Allegations

Nicolas Cage has been drawn into a potential legal dispute.

The actor’s exChristina Fulton, whom the Oscar winner dated from 1988 and 1991, is accusing him of enabling Weston Coppola Cage and his “criminal” behavior after the 34-year-old was arrested last year for allegedly assaulting her.

However, an attorney for the National Treasure star (real name Nicolas Coppola) are pushing back over his alleged culpability.

“The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous,” his lawyer said in a statement to E! News Feb. 20. “Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.”

In an unfiled lawsuit obtained by E! News, Christina accuses her and Nicolas’ son of assault and battery stemming from the April 2024 incident. Weston, Christina’s only child and the eldest of Nicolas’ three kids, was arrested last July on two felony charges for assault with a deadly weapon following the confrontation and later released on bond.

The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times at the time that Weston had punched two victims multiple times, causing injury. He pleaded not guilty to the two felony counts that month, the outlet reported. A hearing has been set for March, according to court records obtained by E! News.

In the documents, Christina, 57, alleges Weston had attacked her in his condo building’s elevator, lobby and parking lot, causing “severe and life threatening injuries.” She says the incident “devastated” her “thriving career as a former model, actress and entrepreneur.”

Christina accuses both Weston and Nicolas of negligence.

She alleges in the documents that her ex has taken “numerous affirmative actions to enable Weston and his criminal behavior,” adding that the actor has allegedly provided financial support for him, paid for his condo, bailed him out of jail and “failed to take reasonable steps to ensure that Weston underwent necessary psychiatric treatment or rehabilitation.”

“Nicolas knew or should have known that Weston posed a serious and imminent danger to others,” the documents state, “including [Christina].”

In a statement to E! News, Weston’s attorney Michael A. Goldstein said Christina’s decision to sue her own son “appears to be nothing short of a money grab and call for attention.” He also commented on the incident that led to his client’s arrest.

“Ms. Fulton correctly advised the responding LAPD officers that her son was in the midst of a mental health crisis at the time of this incident,” the lawyer said. “We will deal with this appropriately, and in a courtroom.”
