And the Oscar goes to…

Hollywood’s biggest night was officially in full swing after the 2025 Oscars kicked off on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles—and Kieran Culkin is already a big winner.

Hosted for the very first time by Conan O’Brien, the 97th Academy Awards honored the year’s critically acclaimed movies, groundbreaking filmmakers and breakout acting performances. (See every star on the Oscars red carpet here.)

The 2025 nominations were stacked with A-listers like Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Ralph Fiennes and Adrien Brody. (See the full list of 2025 Oscar nominees here.)

But after winning big all award season, it was likely that first-time nominees and frontrunners Demi Moore (The Substance), A Real Pain‘s Culkin and Emilia Pérez‘s Zoe Saldaña could take home trophies in three of the four main acting categories following success at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. In fact, Culkin proved the odds were ever in their favor by taking home the first award of the night—Best Actor in a Supporting Role—for his role in the dark comedy.

So, were Saldaña and Moore lucky enough to follow suit?

As for the top honor of Best Picture, AnoraEmilia Pérez and The Substance battled it out against Dune: Part 2, Wicked, Nickel Boys, Conclave, I’m Still Here, The Brutalist and A Complete Unknown for the final award of the night.

But awards aside, the Oscars was sure to be a night filled with unmatched entertainment and unexpected moments that everyone will be talking about the next day. Especially after O’Brien’s opening monologue, which poked fun at many famous faces, including Chalamet, who was in the audience on a date night with girlfriend Kylie Jenner.

O’Brien complimented the actor’s “amazing” bright-yellow Givenchy suit, assuring him, “You will not get hit on your bike tonight. Safe.”

He added, “Bob Dylan wanted to be here tonight,” O’Brien added, “but not that badly.”

He also poked fun at embattled Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón‘s social media controversy, telling viewers, “Loved Anora, I really did. FYI, Anora used the F-word 479 times, only three more than Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist. ‘You tweeted what?!'”

Plus, with performances by Erivo, Grande, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah and Lisa from BLACKPINK, and presenters like Halle Berry, Sterling K. Brown, Penélope Cruz, Whoopi Goldberg, Selena Gomez, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Oprah Winfrey, Harrison Ford and Bowen Yang, there was no shortage of star power.
