James Bond could use an assist from Her Majesty’s Secret Service these days.
But while the fate of the storied franchise gets sorted out, the 2025 Oscars took a moment to pay tribute to the films, the series having kicked off 63 years ago with Dr. No starring Sean Connery.
Longtime franchise producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were honored at the Board of Governors Awards last month and at Sunday’s ceremony, Halle Berry—who played “Bond girl” Jinx in 2002’s Die Another Day opposite Pierce Brosnan—introduced a special musical tribute to the 007 films in their honor. (See all the 2025 Oscar winners.)
Calling Wilson and Broccoli the “heart and soul” of the films, known for their “signature mix of danger, style and intrigue,” she was soon joined by a number of dancers—including a surprise appearance by Margaret Qualley (let the next round of casting rumors begin!)—before Lisa took the stage to sing “Live and Let Die.”
Then Doja Cat emerged to sing “Diamonds Are Forever,” after which Raye took the lead on “Skyfall,” Adele‘s Oscar-winning Bond theme song from 2013.
(Wings‘ “Live and Let Die,” by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney, lost to “The Way We Were” in 1974. The first Bond theme to be nominated for Best Original Song was Burt Bacharach and Hal David‘s “The Look of Love” from 1968’s Casino Royale.)
While it turned out that having Berry and fellow franchise alums Michelle Yeoh (1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies) and Ana de Armas all at the Dolby Theatre on March 2 was just a coincidence, a musical tribute was fitting, seeing as how half of its six-ever Oscar wins (out of 19 total nominations) were for Best Original Son.
After Adele got the thunderball rolling, Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes won in 2016 for “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre and Billie Eilish and Finneas took it in 2022 for the titular theme song from No Time to Die.
Previously, Goldfinger won Best Sound Effects in 1965, Thunderball won Best Special Visual Effects in 1966 and Skyfall also won for Best Sound Editing.
Like Bond himself, as Berry pointed out, the technical categories have also evolved through the years.
