RITZ’s maker is asking people to put the famed cracker down.

Mondelez Global LLC, which owns the cracker brand, announced a voluntary recall of four carton sizes of RITZ cracker sandwiches July 8 over a labeling error that could be life-threatening for some.

The recall, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, includes 8-pack, 20-pack and 40-pack cartons of RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, well as the 20-pack RITZ Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack carton. According to the organization, individually wrapped packs of the cracker sandwiches labeled as the cheese variety may in fact be of the peanut butter variety.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product,” Mondolez Global LLC said in its recall statement released via the FDA. “All outer cartons affected are labeled correctly and provide an allergen advisory statement indicating that the product “contains peanuts.”

The company went on to say that “there have been no reports of injury or illness reported” yet tied to the affected RITZ products and that it was “issuing this recall as a precaution.”

Mondolez Global LLC also shed light on how it uncovered the potential mixup.

“The recall was initiated after Mondelez Global LLC discovered that film packaging rolls used to package individually wrapped products containing peanut butter may contain defects due to a supplier error,” the company’s FDA alert explained. “Corrective actions are being taken to help ensure this issue does not recur.”

The announcement also noted that the recalled RITZ products were sold nationwide and advised customers with peanut allergies not to eat the cracker sandwiches and to discard them instead.
